The first verse in the 5th chapter of Galatians says this, "It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery."
Free from what? Slavery to what? Free from the demands of the law and the yoke of its slavery (see Galatians 4:21-31). Why? We believers are free, but we will be exposed to judaizers who will seek to draw us back into bondage under the guise of being free from being sinful. Our Apostle Paul encouraged us to stand firm in the freedom that Christ died for us to enjoy and to resist the fleshly desire to be subject again to the law.
The works of legalism is a deception from the devil to stifle dependence on and faith in the finished work of Christ (which is our only source and hope of salvation) and to thwart the spiritual growth of the saints. If we are bound up in legalism and wrapped up in our own efforts to adhere to commandments (whether from God or from man) in order to keep our rightstanding with God, then we will be too busy with ourselves to help others come to faith in Jesus.
As someone who has personally navigated the challenge of balancing faith and legalism, I can attest to the confusion that legalistic teachings can cause in a believer’s journey. Legalism often creeps in subtly, presenting itself as a strict adherence to rules or commandments intended to maintain a 'pure' form of faith. However, this can quickly become a spiritual trap, as the article highlights, binding us in a 'yoke of slavery' rather than allowing us to experience the true freedom Christ intended. In my experience, the key to overcoming this deception is a daily reminder of the finished work of Christ on the cross. When we fully embrace faith in His sacrifice, we stop striving to earn righteousness through our efforts and instead rest in the assurance of God's grace. It’s important to remember that legalism doesn’t just restrict our actions; it can hinder our spiritual growth by shifting our focus inward toward self-righteousness rather than outward toward loving and serving others. Moreover, resisting legalism means cultivating a community of grace, where believers encourage one another in faith instead of judgment. This aligns with Paul’s instruction in Galatians 5:1 to stand firm and not subject ourselves again to a yoke of slavery. I found that engaging with others who understand this freedom helps reinforce a healthy perspective and keeps me grounded in the gospel truth. Over time, I noticed that freeing myself from the deception of legalism enabled me to become more effective in sharing faith with others. When we aren’t caught up in legalistic works, we can focus more on the heart of the gospel—Christ’s love and redemption—and that makes our witness authentic and inviting. This journey requires vigilance since the temptation to return to legalistic thinking can resurface, especially when we face doubts or challenges. Staying rooted in scripture, prayer, and fellowship has been my personal strategy for maintaining freedom and growing in grace. The deception of legalism is real, but with faith and community support, freedom in Christ is truly attainable.
