I would be lying if I said I haven’t been on an emotional rollercoaster lately. I never thought I’d be back in this situation again, even though I knew relapse was possible and sadly, probable. After almost two years of being symptom free, my SIBO/IMO are back and there truly is no worse feeling than not feeling like yourself in your own body.
If you don’t know what SIBO and IMO are, it’s basically an overgrowth of bacteria and methane in your body that make you feel really horrible in a lot of different ways. This is my second time doing the elemental diet to treat it. It’s the most aggressive treatment, but it’s also the most effective because it starves the bacteria in your body. So here we are again.
I haven’t really talked about this much on here, but Shaun and I have been trying to get pregnant for a while now and I can’t help but get in my own head about whether this has had something to do with it.
I will say I definitely feel so much more equipped this time around. If you’re dealing with health stuff, just know you’re not alone. We can do hard things 🤍 #sibo #imo #elementaldiet #sibotreatment #guthealth
Living with SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) and IMO (Intestinal Methanogen Overgrowth) can feel overwhelming, especially when symptoms return after a long period of remission. From my experience, the relapse impacts not only physical health but also emotional well-being, which is often overlooked. The elemental diet is a powerful treatment approach that involves consuming a predigested formula designed to starve harmful bacteria and methanogens inside the gut. Though it’s considered aggressive, it’s also one of the most effective protocols available. Preparing for the elemental diet requires mental and physical readiness because it limits intake to very specific nutrients, eliminating typical food that may fuel bacterial overgrowth. One insight I’ve gained during this treatment is the importance of gut motility—how well your digestive system moves contents along. Poor motility can worsen symptoms and make treatment more challenging. Focusing on natural ways to support gut motility, such as gentle exercise and hydration, complements the elemental diet and can improve overall outcomes. Another aspect that can't be ignored is the psychological toll. Relapsing into SIBO/IMO after feeling symptom-free can trigger anxiety, especially when trying to conceive. I found that addressing these feelings openly and connecting with communities using hashtags like #sibo, #imo, and #guthealth helps lessen isolation. Sharing real experiences makes a difference and reminds us that we can do hard things together. If you're considering the elemental diet or facing a relapse, it’s essential to work closely with healthcare providers who understand your unique situation. They can help tailor treatment, monitor progress, and provide support to manage symptoms effectively while balancing other life goals, like pregnancy. This journey has taught me resilience and the value of being equipped with knowledge from past experiences. While relapsing is discouraging, it’s also an opportunity to approach health with renewed strategies and hope. If you’re facing similar challenges, remember that recovery is possible, and you’re not alone in this fight.
