California Dreaming? Or Not… A Book Review

I started reading this book in November of 2024, but had to stop to get ready for an upcoming convention or at least that’s what I tell myself. I often wonder if that’s truly the reason or if it’s because it calls out the very real California mindset that I fought so hard to run away from. The idea that in order to survive the eat or be eaten world that is Southern California, we can never really be our true selves. “Conceal don’t Feel” (the main character works as a very familiar Disney princess at Disneyland) and “the monkey observes, never let the wolf out.” This book takes an extreme approach to all of that as our main character Maeve slowly descents into madness as her world slowly falls apart and the consequences of believing that no one could really understand them shown in an extreme way. The main character is not a good person by any means, but as you read the story and you feel the slow agonizing burn that leads her to where she eventually ends up, you can’t help but feel sorry for her. Book is a bit gory, though for my standards, (I’ve seen Terrifier, Saw, and read bits and pieces of Aron Beauregard’s books) it’s pretty tame, however know your limits in terms of gore and if any type of description of someone getting torn up bothers you, probably skip this one. In my opinion, gore aside, I didn’t feel this was horror, but more of a psychological thriller drama that deals with elements of trauma, grief, self loathing, and denial taking place in sunny Southern California where Mickey Mouse, Disney princesses, Hollywood, and Beverly Hills all blur the line of reality and when reality hits Maeve no one is safe. All in all I give this a 4 out of 5. #books #booktok #horrorbooks #bookreccomendation #bookrevieweroflemon8

... Read moreIn the realm of psychological thrillers, few authors manage to encapsulate the complexities of trauma and societal pressure like Maeve Fly Leede. The book prominently features elements of Southern California's glittering façade, which conceals darker truths about self-identity and societal expectations. The primary character's struggle with mental health is a reflection of a broader issue faced by many individuals—a fight between maintaining a socially acceptable persona and confronting inner demons. This dynamic gives the story its relatable yet haunting twist, leading readers through Maeve’s chaotic journey shaped by grief and self-loathing. As you read through, you'll find that the narrative encourages a discourse on the importance of authenticity in a world that often demands conformity. The usage of famed locations like Disneyland serves as a metaphorical backdrop, illustrating how one's public life can starkly contrast with their private struggles. Additionally, considering the book's gore quotient, it's essential for readers to assess their comfort levels with graphic content, as it plays a pivotal role in highlighting the severity of Maeve's descent into madness. Therefore, this book challenges not only the perceptions of horror but also pushes boundaries within the thriller genre, making it a noteworthy addition to discussions around mental health in literature.
