This beach was one of my favorite. You could go relatively far out and the water still isn’t that deep. The beach itself is beautiful. You can rent chairs and an umbrella, which is a must with the sun! Being close to the equator will cool you alive!
Having visited Smathers Beach myself, I can say it’s one of the best family-friendly beaches in Key West. The shallow waters make it incredibly safe and enjoyable for kids to wade far from shore without the worry of deep drops. One of my favorite things was renting a beach chair and umbrella right on the sand—it truly made a difference under the strong Florida sun, providing both comfort and much-needed shade. In addition to swimming and relaxing, the beach offers plenty of space for beach games like volleyball and sandcastle building, which made the day even more fun with friends. The walk along the shoreline provides picturesque views, especially during sunset, perfect for photography enthusiasts. Remember to bring sunscreen and plenty of water, as the tropical sun near the equator is intense and can be dehydrating quickly. Another tip I found helpful was to check out nearby eateries and beach bars after a day in the sun. It’s a great way to enjoy local cuisine and unwind. Parking can get busy during peak times, so arriving early is recommended. Overall, Smathers Beach combines natural beauty and practical amenities, making it a fantastic destination for travelers exploring Key West and Florida’s coastline.
