This post is an update about my interracial relationship 🥹 hahaha
I got invited to his grandma’s birthday dinner and honestly… I was so stressed thinking what to buy 😭 I know Chinese usually give angpao to parents or grandparents during birthdays, but I’m not Chinese so I won’t make that a habit 😂 I’ll only do angpao for big festivals, not birthdays — that’s the culture I’ll bring into his family 🤭
So I went all the way to Jurong Point, walked around for 3 hours, and finally got an idea — a cute box with small presents inside 🎁 ( I will put on other post for what to give grandma ) plus some snacks for her tea time ☕
I was proud of my choice but… one day before meeting them, suddenly I got nervous LOL couldn’t even sleep 😅
Anyway, the dinner went so well! Me and his family specifically mother felt like we got even closer 💕 I really enjoyed chatting with them — they’re so warm and cute . And maybe because I love history, I always enjoy talking to older people hehe they have the best stories ❤️
That night made me realize how beautiful it is to blend two cultures with love and respect 💖 Slowly, I’m learning and feeling more at home with his family 🥰

For instance, gift-giving traditions can vary widely, and while angpao envelopes are customary in Chinese birthdays, many families have their own special practices. Finding a meaningful and respectful way to honor your partner’s culture, like choosing a thoughtful gift box or snacks for tea time, shows care and willingness to embrace new traditions.
Meeting extended family for the first time can indeed be nerve-wracking. I remember feeling restless the night before joining a family dinner, worried about fitting in or making a good impression. However, openness and genuine interest in your partner's heritage often shine through and build strong connections. Older family members especially tend to appreciate heartfelt conversations and sharing stories; their warmth can create an inviting atmosphere that helps bridge cultural gaps.
Blending two cultures isn’t just about customs; it’s a mutual journey of respect and understanding. Over time, you start noticing the beauty in combining traditions, like celebrating festivals differently or creating new shared rituals that honor both backgrounds. It’s rewarding to see how love can unite diverse histories and make you feel at home in your partner’s family.
From practical advice to emotional insights, embracing an interracial relationship means continuous learning and adaptation. Gifts don’t have to be traditional angpao if that’s not your culture; personalized presents often mean more. And at the heart of it all lies the warmth and connection you foster with your partner's family—sharing moments, stories, and love across cultures.
