You do not need to understand every scar, mobility aid, medical device, oxygen tank, or visible difference you see on someone’s body. It’s really not your business.

And you are not automatically entitled to ask about it just because you’re curious. You are not entitled just because you see me on social media.

A lot of people do not realize that what feels like a casual question to them can force someone else to mentally revisit years of pain, trauma, surgeries, medical neglect, or life-threatening experiences. I understand the intent is not to harm. Regardless of intent, your commentary and questions are harmful.

Please learnboundaries when it comes to disabled people and body differences.

Sometimes the most respectful thing you can do is simply let disabled people exist without commentary or the need for us to satisfy your insatiable curiosity of my body.

... Read moreLiving with visible scars and medical devices is not just a physical experience but an emotional journey that many people outside the disability community often misunderstand. From my personal experience, the constant questioning about my scars or mobility aids can feel invasive and disrespectful, even if questions come from a place of curiosity or kindness. Many people don't realize that these questions often trigger memories of painful surgeries, medical trauma, or moments of feeling vulnerable and exposed. For example, some of the scars I carry are from multiple port surgeries that my body rejected, leading to permanent removal due to dangerous complications. Each mark tells a story of survival, not something to be scrutinized or questioned casually. On social media, the experience can be even more overwhelming. People zoom in on my body as if I were an exhibit, asking if bruises or scars are from something they should be concerned about. These inquiries ignore the fact that I am a whole person, deserving privacy and respect, not just an object of medical curiosity. One of the most important lessons I have learned is that it's okay to set boundaries. It's okay to say, "I prefer not to talk about my body" or to disengage from invasive questions. As a society, we need to shift from viewing disabled bodies through a medical lens to recognizing individual dignity and personhood. Respecting these boundaries isn’t just about being polite—it’s about understanding that everyone deserves to exist without being subjected to unsolicited scrutiny. Sometimes the most compassionate response is silence and acceptance, allowing disabled individuals to live their lives authentically without feeling the pressure to explain or justify their bodies. If you want to support disabled people, listen more and question less. Appreciate diversity in bodies and experiences without needing to satisfy your curiosity. This respectful approach fosters inclusion and reduces the harm inflicted by well-meaning but inappropriate questions. Ultimately, learning about disability respect and boundaries helps build a more empathetic, equitable community where we can all feel safe and valued as we are.
