When did nurses stop supporting each other?

I started my nursing career at 20. Fresh out of school, eager, nervous… and honestly, unprepared for something no textbook could teach me: being bullied by the nurses I looked up to.

I thought nursing would be all mentorship, guidance, and teamwork. I imagined asking questions and being supported as I learned the ropes.

Instead, I found myself facing harsh criticism, cold shoulders, and “lessons” that felt more like punishments. Small mistakes became big deals. Questions I asked to learn were met with eye rolls or snapping.

I didn’t know it at the time, but this is a pattern many new grads experience. Being young, eager, and inexperienced sometimes feels like an invitation for others to assert power.

It’s exhausting. Confusing. Demoralizing. I questioned myself constantly. Was I not good enough? Was I doing something wrong? Or was this just “part of nursing”?

It’s taken me years to realize something important: being treated like that was never okay, and it wasn’t my fault. I was new. I was learning. I deserved guidance, not intimidation.

I share this because I know I’m not alone. There are so many 20-, 21-, 22-year-old nurses starting their careers in environments where kindness isn’t always the norm. And it’s hard.

But here’s the silver lining: you grow. You find your confidence. You learn to set boundaries. You find mentors who lift you up instead of tear you down. And you carry those lessons forward to make sure the next generation doesn’t face the same struggles.

Being bullied as a new grad was painful, but it also taught me resilience. It reminded me why respect, mentorship, and compassion in nursing are so important.

No new nurse should feel alone. No young nurse should feel small. And no profession that calls itself caring should tolerate that kind of behavior. #lemon8partner #newgradnurse #nurselife #nursingstudent #nursingschool

... Read moreNurse bullying is a pervasive issue that impacts many new graduate nurses early in their careers. This behavior often manifests as harsh criticism, cold shoulders, and punitive lessons that leave new nurses feeling isolated and undervalued. Despite nursing being a caring profession, the reality in many healthcare environments can be quite different, with power dynamics enabling experienced nurses to assert dominance rather than provide support. The problem of nurse bullying not only affects emotional well-being but also jeopardizes patient care and safety. When new nurses feel demoralized or hesitant to ask questions, it compromises their ability to learn and perform effectively. Recognizing this, healthcare institutions are increasingly emphasizing the importance of mentorship programs, where seasoned nurses provide guidance rooted in respect and empathy. Building a supportive culture requires a systemic approach. Training on professional communication, conflict resolution, and emotional intelligence can help reduce toxic behaviors among nursing staff. Furthermore, encouraging open dialogue about bullying and implementing clear policies ensures new nurses feel safe to report mistreatment without fear of retaliation. The keywords "nurse bullying," "new grad nurse support," "nursing mentorship," "nurse workplace culture," and "resilience in nursing" are important for understanding and tackling this issue. Emphasizing resilience and boundary-setting helps new nurses protect their mental health while developing confidence and competence. Ultimately, fostering a positive environment where nurses support each other not only benefits individual nurses but enhances overall healthcare quality. When experienced nurses commit to uplifting new grads, the entire nursing profession becomes stronger and more compassionate, reversing the troubling trend of isolation and intimidation highlighted in the original article.
