NURSES, do you like what you do?

Some days I honestly wonder if anyone actually enjoys being a nurse anymore. I’ve been on shifts where the stress, short staffing, constant charting, family demands, and last-minute orders all pile up like a storm, and I just pause and think, why did I sign up for this again? And yet, there are moments, a patient who smiles after a long day, a colleague who has your back, a life you helped save, that remind me why I keep going. I’m not saying I hate nursing, but I also don’t sugarcoat it: this job is exhausting, thankless at times, and emotionally draining. Some days I love it, some days I survive it, and some days I question whether the system will ever let us truly enjoy the work we do. But I show up anyway, because somewhere between the chaos, it still matters. #lemon8partner #lemon8challenge #shifts

2025/12/22 Edited to

... Read moreIt's funny, when I first started nursing school, I pictured myself looking all professional in crisp scrubs, ready to save lives. And don't get me wrong, there are days like that! But the reality of #NurseLife is so much more than just the uniform or the shiny medical devices you see on TV. My previous post touched on the emotional rollercoaster, and I wanted to dive a bit deeper into the practical side that often adds to that stress. Think about our daily attire: those scrubs. Mine are often pink, just like in that mirror selfie from the break room, and let me tell you, they’re designed for comfort and practicality, not always glamour! But it's not just about what we wear; it's about what we use and do in that hospital setting. Every shift involves a constant dance with protective equipment. Those latex gloves, or increasingly, nitrile alternatives due to allergies, aren't just for show. They're a barrier, a necessity for infection control and safety. We're constantly donning and doffing them, washing our hands until they're dry and cracked. This might seem minor, but it's part of the relentless pace, the constant vigilance that adds to the mental load. Working with mobile medical devices, from IV pumps to portable X-ray machines, requires sharp focus. There's a lot of technical skill involved, and sometimes, a piece of equipment malfunctions at the worst possible moment. Dealing with those last-minute orders, as I mentioned before, often means rushing to set up a new infusion or assist with a procedure, all while ensuring every piece of equipment, including those latex-containing supplies, is sterile and ready. It’s not just the big emergencies; it’s the hundred little things that demand your attention and precision throughout the day. And let's talk about the physical toll. Being on your feet for 12+ hours, constantly moving patients, pushing heavy medical devices, rushing down hallways – it’s a workout! That break area in the hospital? Sometimes it feels like a distant dream. You grab a quick bite, maybe check your phone, and then it's back to the grind. This physical exhaustion compounds the emotional drainage. It’s hard to stay positive and empathetic when your body is screaming at you, and your mind is racing through a mental checklist of tasks and patient needs. So, when I ask if anyone truly enjoys being a nurse anymore, it’s not just about the emotional impact, but also the relentless practical demands. It's about balancing patient care with documentation, managing family expectations, and ensuring every single piece of equipment, from the smallest latex glove to the largest mobile medical device, is used correctly and safely. It's a job that requires not just a big heart, but also incredible resilience, meticulous attention to detail, and a very strong bladder! But amidst all that, there's a unique satisfaction in knowing you make a tangible difference in people's lives, even on the toughest days when you're just surviving the shift.

I was wondering that after being admitted into the ER a few weeks ago. No one came in my room for about 4 1/2 hours and then when the nurse finally came in, she was a very young girl and seemed scared to come in my room. I felt bad for her. Maybe someone had yelled at her because she seemed like she was extremely overwhelmed and probably not even 25 years old.😭 i’m going to trust and believe that God will grant me the blessing of being in an ordained position as a nurse where I will not be overwhelmed, but able to take on the responsibility and endure it on a physical and spiritual level❤️
