Following up on my recent 'GRWM' nail adventure, I wanted to dive a little deeper into some of the things that have truly made a difference in my DIY nail journey, especially as a self-taught beginner. When I shared my best set, I briefly touched on prep, but let's really talk about why those 'BEFORE' steps are game-changers for nails that actually last! First off, the nail prep dehydrator and nail primer aren't just fancy words on bottles; they're your best friends for preventing lifting. I used to skip these sometimes, thinking 'how much difference can it make?' — huge! After gently filing and buffing the surface of my natural nails, a good dehydrator truly strips away all the natural oils, and then the primer creates that tacky surface for your base coat or glue to really grip. I've found that pushing back my cuticles and making sure the nail plate is super clean before anything else goes on is key. This meticulous prep means my full-coverage tips stay put, right up to the cuticle area, giving that natural, salon-quality feel we all aim for. Now, for something a bit more personal: my struggle with UV lights. As I mentioned, I’ve recently realized I’m allergic, which was a bit of a bummer since so many amazing gels use them. If you’re also experiencing sensitivity to UV lights or certain nail ingredients, you are not alone! For this 'AFTER' look, I completely opted for regular nail glue instead of UV gel. It’s been a lifesaver, allowing my hands a much-needed break. If you're in a similar boat, definitely look into non-UV alternatives like good old nail glue for tips, or even exploring air-dry gel systems if you prefer that finish. Always protect your skin if you suspect sensitivity – I’m definitely investing in some UV protection gloves soon! Let's talk about those adorable sticker accents! For my last set, I used some black and white geometric nail art stickers that really brought the whole look together. While they looked amazing, they were super delicate. My top tip for working with fragile stickers? Use a pair of fine-point tweezers, but practice gently peeling them off their backing first. Don't rush! Once you've placed it, press it down firmly but gently, especially around the edges, to avoid air bubbles. The real secret to making them last, and not lifting, is to encapsulate them properly. After applying my chosen colors like the b827 nude and a touch of b822 orange glitter for accent, I apply a generous layer of top coat (sometimes even two thin layers, curing each one) over the sticker. This seals it in, protecting it from daily wear and tear. I usually finish with a matte top coat on some nails and a regular glossy one on others for variety. Finally, for any fellow beginners out there, don't get discouraged! There are always ups and downs, but it’s so satisfying when you get that perfect set.
