Kids Mental Health Coping Strategies

2024/9/18 Edited to

... Read moreSupporting kids' mental health can be a daunting task for parents, especially when dealing with conditions like anxiety, ADHD, and ODD. Implementing calming techniques can be beneficial in helping children articulate their emotions, from feelings of frustration to moments of calm. Utilizing methods like the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique can greatly aid in redirecting focus during overwhelming moments. This technique encourages children to identify: 5 things they can see, 4 things they can feel, 3 things they can hear, 2 things they can smell, and 1 thing they can taste. Additionally, breathing exercises, such as 'Bear Breathing' or 'Bunny Breathing,' are excellent for helping kids learn relaxation methods. These practical approaches not only soothe anxiety but foster emotional awareness and self-regulation. Lastly, a 'Feelings Wheel' can be a tremendous resource, enabling kids to explore and express their feelings by categorizing their emotions, ultimately contributing to better mental health and coping mechanisms.

How is this going so far for you? My 6 year old also has ADHD and ODD. I’m mentally exhausted and don’t know what to do anymore to calm his out burst and the battles I deal with everyday. He won’t go to school half the time and is constantly trying to go to the nurse “saying his sick” every single day!
