i think I’m ok not reading the second

I was really into the book at the beginning, and then it started to jump POV a little too sporadically for me.

The ✨ magical ✨ parts just weren’t magical enough for me. There are some explanations that i think will be revealed in the second book, but I’m just not sure if I’m willing to read the second (as of rn).

Was still an easy read and i didn’t NOT enjoy it, i was just here for the ride 😅

... Read moreAs a fellow book lover, I know the feeling of starting a new series with high hopes, especially when it’s a popular one like 'Assistant to the Villain' by Hannah Nicole Maehrer. The premise itself was intriguing, and I was genuinely excited to dive into a story that promised a fresh take on fantasy. Like many, I was drawn in at the beginning, anticipating a journey filled with enchantment and compelling characters. However, as I progressed through the chapters, I found myself in a familiar dilemma that many readers face: deciding whether to continue with a sequel when the first book didn't quite hit all the right notes. One of the main points that made me pause after finishing 'Assistant to the Villain' was the narrative style, specifically the sporadic point-of-view (POV) shifts. When I pick up a fantasy novel, I crave deep immersion—a feeling of truly living within the characters' minds and experiencing their world alongside them. Unfortunately, the frequent and sometimes abrupt changes in perspective throughout the book made it difficult for me to fully connect with any single character. Just as I would start to settle into one character's journey and emotional landscape, the story would jump to another, pulling me out of the immersive experience. This constant shift, while sometimes used effectively in other novels, felt a bit too disjointed for my taste here, preventing that deep, emotional investment I look for in a good series. Another significant aspect that left me feeling lukewarm was the magical elements. In a fantasy world, magic should feel, well, magical! It should be wondrous, mysterious, and awe-inspiring, with clear rules and consequences that enrich the world-building. For me, the magical parts in 'Assistant to the Villain' just weren’t magical enough. They were present, but they didn't evoke that sense of wonder or feel truly integral to the high stakes of the narrative in a way that captivated my imagination. I kept waiting for that 'spark' that makes fantasy truly special, but it never quite materialized in a way that resonated with me. So, why am I okay with not reading the second book? It's not that I disliked the first one; it was an easy read, and I appreciated the ride. But as readers, our time is precious, and there are countless stories waiting to be discovered. The decision to skip a sequel isn't always about outright disliking a book; sometimes, it’s about prioritizing what truly enriches your reading experience. If the first book leaves you with significant reservations – whether it’s about pacing, character development, or world-building – it’s perfectly valid to question if the next installment will resolve those issues or simply amplify them. While the original author mentioned that some explanations might be revealed in the second book, the promise of future revelations alone isn't always enough to compel me to invest more time if the foundation of the first book didn't quite click. 'Reading enriches the mind,' but only if the books you choose genuinely resonate and bring you joy. It's a personal choice, and sometimes, letting a series go is the best decision for your reading journey.

but I think it’s a fantasy series worth reading
how many of you guessed the series before i revealed it? the poppy war is a grimdark military fantasy series, and it has a lot of disturbing elements. it doesn’t shy away from the realities and horrors of war, so if you find that content upsetting i would not recommend picking up these books.
