Hydrangea on Penang Hill, Malaysia
I spotted this beautiful hydrangea on Penang Hill, hydrangeas are probably one of my top five favorite flowers, so I was tickled to see one here. But did you know hydrangeas aren’t native to Malaysia? They were introduced during the British colonial era, when officers built hilltop bungalows and landscaped gardens to recreate the feel of English country estates. Alongside roses and camellias, hydrangeas became part of that legacy, still blooming today in shaded corners of the hill. Penang whispers stories of the past, from Francis Light’s 1786 landing to the colonial retreats high above George Town. And yet, Penang Hill is more than history; it’s a living treasure. As part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, its flora is globally significant, with rare orchids and endemic species thriving alongside these colonial garden blooms. Standing among the flowers here feels like touching both worlds at once, heritage and biodiversity, beauty and resilience, all blooming together on this hill. #PenangHill #HydrangeaLove #UNESCOBiosphere #penangmalaysia
