... Read moreOh my goodness, the best time of year is finally here! Stepping out into my Florida garden and seeing our incredible century-old blackberry bush absolutely laden with these beautiful, dark, ripe berries just makes my heart sing. There’s truly nothing that compares to the taste of a blackberry you’ve picked yourself, still warm from the sun. I just harvested a huge batch, filling my bright green colander until it was overflowing with these gorgeous gems, exactly like you see in the picture! The joy of gathering them is just as sweet as the berries themselves.
If you've ever thought about growing your own homegrown blackberries, I can't recommend it enough! It’s incredibly rewarding. Our plant has been a part of our family for generations, and it just keeps on giving. For anyone looking to start their own berry patch, whether it's a dedicated bed or a smart blackberry planter on the patio, there are a few things I've learned over the years. Blackberries generally love a spot with plenty of sunshine – at least 6-8 hours a day. They thrive in well-drained soil, and mine seem to do best with a good layer of mulch to keep the weeds down and the moisture in. Don't forget, these beauties need a bit of support as they grow; a simple trellis or sturdy wire fence can work wonders to keep those canes happy and productive.
Beyond their incredible taste, it’s amazing to know how good these little powerhouses are for you. I've been reading up on them, and homegrown blackberries are absolutely packed with antioxidants, especially those amazing anthocyanins, which give them their deep, rich color. These compounds are fantastic for fighting off free radicals and supporting overall health. Plus, they’re a great source of Vitamin C, Vitamin K, and fiber, making them a truly guilt-free indulgence. Knowing all the health benefits just makes every bite even more delicious!
When it comes to harvesting, timing is everything. You want your blackberries to be plump, dark, and detach easily from the plant with just a gentle tug. If you have to pull hard, they’re not quite ready. I always pick mine in the morning after the dew has dried, and I carefully place them into a basket or my colander to avoid bruising. Once picked, they don’t have a very long shelf life, so I try to enjoy them fresh within a few days. Any extras either go straight into a delicious pie, a batch of homemade jam, or get frozen for smoothies later on. There’s always a steady stream of them coming from the bush, so we’re never short!
Growing your own fruit connects you to nature in such a special way. From seeing the delicate blossoms in spring to watching the berries ripen, it's a constant source of wonder. And the reward? A basket full of sweet, juicy, sun-kissed homegrown blackberries. If you have the space, even a small corner, consider adding a blackberry bush to your garden. You won't regret it!
