Any moms out there with long nails?

Ever since starting prenatals, my nails are the strongest they’ve been. I’ve always enjoyed the routine of giving myself a manicure, and just prior to having my son I was doing weekly at home manis.

Right before I had him I cut my nails short after my mom made a comment about “you’re gonna scratch him, these things happen”.

I’ve since scratched him on accident and immediately clipped my nails super short, but right now they’re actually pretty long and looking good. I’m trying to be extra careful when handling him so as not to scratch.

Any other moms out there having a similar experience?

... Read moreOh, I totally get where you're coming from! It's such a unique mom dilemma, isn't it? On one hand, you finally have strong nails (thanks, prenatals!), and on the other, you're constantly worried about accidentally scratching your precious little one. I've been there, staring at my beautifully growing nails, feeling that pull between wanting to feel a bit 'normal' and put-together, and the overwhelming instinct to protect my baby. After my own little scratch incident (the worst feeling ever!), I tried a few things that have helped me keep my nails a bit longer without constant fear. First, regular filing is key. Even if you're not clipping, keeping the edges smooth and free of any sharp points can make a huge difference. I find that a slightly rounded or almond-shaped nail is less likely to cause a deep scratch than a square shape with sharp corners. It’s all about minimizing those potential hazards! Another tip I swear by is moisturizing. Keeping your cuticles and nails healthy can actually prevent snags and breaks, which in turn means fewer sharp edges. I keep a small hand cream with me at all times and apply it whenever I think about it. And when I'm handling my baby, especially during diaper changes or baths, I try to be extra mindful of how I'm holding them. Sometimes, just adjusting my grip slightly can prevent any accidental contact. For the first few weeks, some moms even use baby mittens, not just to prevent babies from scratching themselves, but also as an extra layer of protection against mom's nails! For those moments when you just can't bring yourself to clip them short but still want peace of mind, have you considered nail wraps or a good gel overlay? They can add an extra layer of strength and a smooth finish, making your nails feel more secure. It’s like a little protective shield! And honestly, there's so much FTM Long nails Inspo out there showing that you don't have to sacrifice your style entirely. Many moms opt for a chic, shorter manicure that still looks polished and feels much safer. Think about elegant, understated designs that work well on shorter lengths, or even just a beautiful neutral polish on a practical length. Ultimately, it's about finding that balance that works for you and your family. We all want to feel like ourselves, even with a tiny human depending on us. And remember, those strong nails you got from prenatals might not last forever; postpartum hormones can sometimes make them brittle again. So, cherish this strong nail phase while it lasts, but also be prepared with fortifying polishes or even biotin supplements if you notice them weakening later on. It’s definitely a journey of trial and error to figure out what works best for your lifestyle and your baby’s safety. Let's keep this conversation going – what's been your biggest nail challenge since becoming a mom?

I think their are cute but maybe short to medium length will be more convenient. Esp with kid they could suddenly run to you and can hurt you and the baby

I am not a mom but long nails make it hard to exist. Like I honestly can’t wipe and I also struggle with every day things like texting or pulling up my jeans without breaking my nails
