It all started when I picked up a Lewis Whole Wheat 1/2 Loaf, and while checking the nutrition facts and ingredients list, I saw 'HONEY' prominently listed. It made me wonder, why is this supposedly healthy bread packed with added sweeteners? It turns out, there are a few reasons why manufacturers add honey, or other sugars, to whole wheat bread. Beyond just taste, sugar acts as a preservative, helping the bread last longer on shelves. It also helps with browning during baking and gives the yeast something to feed on, contributing to a better texture. While a little bit of honey might seem harmless, especially when you see 'No High Fructose Corn Syrup' or 'Saturated Fat Free' prominently displayed, it still contributes to the overall sugar content and calories whole wheat bread provides. My advice? Always check the bread ingredient list! Don’t just stop at the front-of-package claims. Look for the actual nutrition label whole wheat bread provides. The ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, so if sugar, honey, molasses, or corn syrup are high up on that list, you know there's a significant amount. A higher fiber content is a good indicator of a genuinely wholesome whole grain bread. My goal is to find a whole wheat bread loaf packaged that offers great taste without the extra unnecessary sweetness. It's about making informed choices for your daily bread, ensuring you get the full benefits of whole grains without the sneaky additions.
