The holiday procrastination

Why??? 😂😂

2024/12/11 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, so confession time: every single holiday season, despite my best intentions, I find myself staring at a to-do list that’s grown into a monster, wondering where all the time went. Sound familiar? Do you do this too? It’s not just me, right? That feeling of dread when you realize you still haven't bought half your gifts, or baked those festive cookies you promised, or even decided on your Christmas dinner menu… it’s the ultimate holiday procrastination headache! I used to beat myself up about it, thinking I was just disorganized. But over the years, I’ve realized it’s a common holiday phenomenon. Why does it happen? For me, it’s a mix of things. Sometimes, it’s sheer overwhelm. The holidays bring so many expectations – from family gatherings to decorating, cooking, gift-giving, and social events. It’s a lot! And when a task feels too big, it’s easier to just… not start. Other times, it’s the pressure to be 'perfect.' We see all these picture-perfect holiday scenes on social media, and suddenly, our simple plans don't feel good enough. So we delay, hoping for a burst of inspiration or more time to make everything flawless. (Spoiler: that rarely happens!). And let’s be honest, sometimes we’re just burnt out before the holidays even truly begin, and our brains just can’t handle one more thing. But I’ve learned a few tricks that have genuinely helped me manage my holiday procrastination, and I wanted to share them. Maybe they’ll help you too! First, start small and early. Even if it’s just making a list in early November, or buying one gift a week, those small steps prevent the giant mountain of tasks later. Second, break it down. Instead of 'plan holiday dinner,' try 'choose main dish,' 'make grocery list,' 'assign sides.' It feels less daunting. Third, don't strive for perfection. Good enough is often truly good enough, especially when it means you get to actually enjoy the season instead of stressing. Fourth, delegate! If you have family or friends who offer to help, take them up on it. It’s not a sign of weakness; it’s smart planning and often makes tasks more fun. And finally, schedule 'me time'. Seriously. The holidays are supposed to be joyful, not just a marathon of chores. Make sure you build in time to relax, recharge, and enjoy the festive spirit – even if it’s just 15 minutes of quiet with a cup of tea. Another thing that helps me is setting realistic expectations. The holidays don't have to be perfect magazine spreads. They are about connection, joy, and making memories. If that means store-bought cookies instead of homemade, or a simpler meal, that’s perfectly fine! The most important thing is your well-being and enjoying the moment. So, if you’re sitting there, feeling the holiday procrastination monster tapping on your shoulder, remember you’re absolutely not alone. We all wrestle with it! But with a few simple shifts, we can make this holiday season a little less stressful and a lot more merry. What are your best tips for beating the holiday procrastination blues? I'd love to hear them!
