When we're constantly stepping in to 'save' someone, even with the best intentions, we might actually be HURTING them by preventing them from developing their own resilience. It's not about being cold; it's about letting them gain their own strength. A big lesson for me was understanding the distinction the OCR points out: 'HELP THEM BE VERSUS SUPPORTING.' Helping, in the codependent sense, often means taking over or fixing a problem for someone. Supporting, on the other hand, means standing by them, offering guidance, listening, and believing in their ability to navigate their own challenges. It’s about creating a safe space for them to grow, not preventing them from falling. This shift in perspective required me to really examine my own motivations. Why did I feel this persistent need to help others? Was it genuine altruism, or was I seeking validation, feeling indispensable, or trying to avoid my own discomfort by focusing on someone else's problems? Recognizing those underlying drivers was uncomfortable but necessary for my own self-care and boundaries. One of the hardest parts of this journey has been managing the feeling of being TIED OUTCOME SUCCEED. I used to get so invested in the outcome of my 'help' that if things didn't work out, I'd feel like a failure, or worse, get angry at the other person. Learning to detach from the outcome means offering support without carrying the burden of their choices. It means trusting them, even if their path isn't the one you'd choose.
