Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Hokkien Mee Flies…

Today, after much raving from my fellow FB foodies, I finally got to try the much-talked-about Rainbow House Hokkien Mee.

The first thing that caught my eye when it was served were the glistening chunks of pork lard—the semi-transparent glaze a clear sign of fresh frying. The dark, alluring color of the noodles was proof of a proper wok toss, or as I like to call it, full of wok hei. And indeed, the very first mouthful was bursting with wok hei umami.

The squid was so soft to the bite—such a rare treat compared to the usual chewiness we’ve come to expect. Mixed with their sambal chilli and a squeeze of lime, it became a dish so satisfying I would have expected it only from a seasoned Hokkien Mee maestro.

But here’s the kicker: this is from a zichar eatery with over 50 items on the menu, and yet they managed to whip up a wickedly delicious Hokkien Mee that had me polishing off the plate in just 10 minutes.

This, my friends, is truly Crouching Zichar, Hidden Hokkien Mee!

... Read moreIf you're seeking a memorable local dining experience at Rainbow Rice House, here are some tips and insights I've gathered from my visits and fellow diners. Although they offer over 50 dishes, their Hokkien Mee stands out as a must-try for those craving authentic Singaporean flavors. The secret lies in their careful wok toss that delivers that coveted smoky aroma and umami depth many foodies cherish. I also recommend pairing the noodles with their sambal chili and a squeeze of fresh lime, as the tangy spice perfectly complements the savory notes. Despite being a busy coffee shop environment, the staff are efficient, and dishes are served promptly—ideal for a casual breakfast or lunch. The location on North Canal Road is convenient to reach, making it easy to drop by even on a tight schedule. Keep in mind that popular items like their Hokkien Mee can sell out early, so arriving earlier in the day is a smart move. If you're curious about other favorites, exploring their comprehensive menu can reveal more delightful finds beyond the noodles, reflecting Rainbow Rice House's versatility as a zichar eatery. Overall, it’s a spot worth revisiting for anyone passionate about Singaporean hawker fare.
