Does your kid put EVERYTHING In their mouth?

2024/10/30 Edited to

... Read moreOh my goodness, mama, you are absolutely not alone in this! Your post about your one-year-old putting everything in their mouth, especially paper, resonated so much with me. It feels like a constant battle, doesn't it? My little one went through a similar phase, and I remember constantly wondering, 'Is this normal?' and 'When will it finally stop?' Let me tell you, it's a completely typical developmental stage, though it can certainly be exhausting! Babies and toddlers explore the world through their mouths. It’s their primary way of understanding textures, shapes, and properties of objects before their fine motor skills are fully developed. Think of it as their way of 'seeing' with their mouth! This intense oral exploration usually peaks around 6-12 months, coinciding with teething breakthroughs, and can continue strongly up to 18 months or even two years. They're also getting vital sensory input, which helps with their language development and understanding of their environment. So, when your little one is munching on *paper*, trying to taste your *shoes*, or diligently vacuuming *crumbs off of the floor*, they’re actually learning! While it’s normal, it’s also crucial to keep them safe. The biggest concerns are choking hazards and ingesting harmful substances. I quickly learned to be extra vigilant about childproofing. Small items that can fit through a toilet paper roll are potential choking hazards. Things like coins, small toys, tiny battery covers, or even loose buttons on clothing are big no-nos within reach. Regular floor sweeps become part of your daily routine to catch those sneaky crumbs and other small bits. I even became a bit obsessive about cleaning surfaces and toys that ended up in my baby's mouth, especially after a public outing – those shared toys can carry a lot of germs! If your baby loves to mouth, offering safe, clean alternatives can be a lifesaver. High-quality teethers are fantastic – I always had a few chilled ones on hand, and those silicone chew necklaces for moms were a godsend, too! Soft fabric books, or even safe wooden toys can satisfy that oral need. If they grab something unsafe like a piece of paper, gently redirect them to a designated chew toy and offer praise when they choose the safe option. Sometimes, engaging them in messy sensory play (with taste-safe materials like cooked pasta or yogurt paint) can also help meet that need for exploration in a safer way, giving their mouth a different kind of sensory input. The good news is that for most children, this intense mouthing phase does gradually subside as they develop more sophisticated ways to explore, like using their hands more purposefully and starting to talk. You might notice a decrease around 18 months to two years, though some kids might still occasionally mouth objects beyond that, especially when tired or anxious. Just remember, consistency in redirection, providing safe alternatives, and a whole lot of patience is key. You're doing a great job navigating this stage, and it will pass! What are your go-to safe chew toys or strategies that have worked for your little ones?
