WIPSnips- Angle

Xander reached into his inside jacket pocket and pulled out a card before handing it to me.

I took the small rectangle of thick cream colored card stock and rubbed my fingers over the dimpled edges. Odd, from what I recalled people didn't normally hand over damaged cards.

I frowned down at it. No, not damaged, this was a deliberate design, a scalloped edge not dimpled. Thick stock, embossed lettering in antique gold, with an elegant calligraphy script underneath. I didn't recognize the name, though the initials and details made it clear this was a law firm. Named partner.

"I assume this Mr. Roberts is the lawyer representing whoever's interested?" Why my company. What was the angle here?

"No, that's the buyer."

I arched an eyebrow. I kept hold of the card and brushed my thumb over the embossed name. "Interesting. Not a name I know."

"New York."

New York, east coast capitol for humans and paranormals alike, and my original home, though I'd avoided the place like the plague. I doubted there was anyone there who'd recognize me now, and given that I'd only moved to Minneapolis, this time at least, eight years ago, the odds of anyone connecting Travis MacIntire with Thomas Briant were slim. I hadn't used that name in well over two hundred years, and taken pains to avoid returning to New York whenever possible.

"What would bring a New York lawyer out here, to buy a firm—"

"Only your share of the company, and no, I've no idea what his interest is. Only that he offered me an ungodly sum. One I was almost tempted to take." He shrugged when I caught his eye. "It's nothing personal, all business. Then I remembered the reason why our business is doing so well is you, well, and my own not so insignificant contributions." The business was, at best, diverse. To others it might appear as a jumbled mess with no real focus.

Our bank accounts and connections said different.

We'd grown nicely in the last three years especially, and I'd been on the look out for people trying to buy us out, but that was one of the reasons I'd avoided becoming publicly traded. Unless either myself or Xander were willing to sell our part, it would be impossible for someone else to come in and take over. Well, not impossible, but damned difficult and would likely involve one or both of us dying.

Xander had wanted to go publish, but a few quiet explanations about what would come to light in the way of both of our dealings, had put Xander off the momentary fancy of applying to the various government departments involved in taking a company public.
