The Boyfriend: my short review
This marks book 98 of the year! I am so close to 100 and having an amazing time doing it.
This was for sure a 5⭐️ for me. I thought that I had the twist but I was way off. Sometimes I feel like her epilogues ruin books for me but I loved the ending to this one!
If you want a new fast paced Frieda book to read (and don’t mind an insanely dumb main character) I highly recommend!

Building on my quick review, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into why Freida McFadden's "The Boyfriend" earned a solid 5 stars from me. This book was an absolute whirlwind, and I’m still thinking about it! If you're looking for a page-turner that will keep you guessing, you've found it. A common question I see about Freida McFadden's books is whether they're "spicy." For "The Boyfriend," I'd say no, not in the traditional romance sense. It's definitely a psychological thriller, focusing on suspense and the intricate plot rather than explicit romantic or sexual content. So, if you're looking for steamy scenes, this isn't it, but if you want nail-biting suspense, you're in the right place! The tension comes from the psychological games and the unfolding mystery, not from romance. Let's talk about that iconic book cover for a moment. If you've seen it, you know it's striking. The image of a red tie with bloodstains on white bedding perfectly sets the tone for the dark secrets within. It's minimalist but incredibly effective, hinting at the domestic turmoil and danger without giving anything away. It’s definitely one of those covers that makes you pick up the paperback and wonder what twisted story lies inside. It’s a brilliant visual cue that something sinister is lurking beneath the surface of a seemingly normal life. The original review mentioned the main character being 'dumb', and honestly, that's part of the charm (and frustration!). Often, in thrillers, you find yourself yelling at the protagonist for their poor choices, and this book is no exception. But Freida McFadden masterfully uses this to build tension and make you question everything. You'll be guessing until the very end, and trust me, the twist is worth it. I genuinely thought I had it figured out, but I was completely off! The way the story unfolds, even the character's flaws become integral to the suspense. This book is quintessential Freida McFadden – fast-paced from page one. You blink, and you’ve read 50 pages. Her writing style is so engaging; it just pulls you in. If you're new to her work, "The Boyfriend" is a fantastic entry point. It has all her signature elements: a seemingly ordinary situation that spirals into a nightmare, unreliable narration, and those jaw-dropping revelations. The ending, unlike some other thrillers where the epilogue feels tacked on, felt perfectly earned and satisfying here. It ties up loose ends while still leaving you with that lingering chill that only a great thriller can provide. So, who should read "The Boyfriend"? If you love psychological thrillers, enjoy a good plot twist that leaves your mouth agape, and don't mind a protagonist who sometimes makes questionable decisions, then this is for you. It's a quick read that packs a huge punch, perfect for a weekend binge. Get ready to be hooked and question everyone's motives!
