These are my nices biggest must haves for anyone in work with more or in the future.

I left the corporate world 8 months ago and do not ever plan to return. I am now freelancing and working with startups. One day I’ll have a fulltime job again, but I will no longer compromise my values for any organization.

1. Pay me fairly, do not negotiate my hourly.

2. Any manager I have must understand the difference between feedback andand reviewing working.

3. My time is spent as I please. Clock in culture is not welcome.

4. Innovation and creativity are mandatory. No small minds.

5. Speed to execute is a must. I can’t work for anyone who takes weeks to complete simple tasks.

I could go on.

... Read moreHaving made the shift from a structured corporate environment to the dynamic world of freelancing, I've come to understand firsthand how important it is to set clear non-negotiables when choosing clients and projects. One of the biggest lessons I've learned is the value of fair compensation. For freelancers, every hour spent working directly impacts income, so negotiating fair pay upfront without constant haggling saves time and stress. Equally critical is working with managers who truly distinguish between constructive feedback and mere micromanagement. Early in my transition, I encountered situations where feedback felt like nitpicking, which only drained motivation. Over time, I prioritized collaborating with clients who respect autonomy while offering thoughtful guidance. Another important aspect is the freedom to manage my own time. The rigid clock-in culture from corporate days felt suffocating, so embracing flexible schedules allows me to balance productivity with well-being. This autonomy has greatly improved my work quality and satisfaction. Creativity and innovation are not just buzzwords but essential drivers in startup projects I contribute to. Working with small-minded teams who resist new ideas can stall progress; hence, I seek engagements that encourage fresh perspectives and experimentation. Finally, I insist on efficient execution. Delays and procrastination from clients or their teams can obstruct momentum and client relationships. Efficiency ensures that projects move forward steadily and expectations are met promptly. In sum, leaving corporate life has taught me the importance of setting firm non-negotiables centered on respect, fairness, flexibility, creativity, and speed. These values have transformed my freelance career, helping me avoid burnout and find work that aligns with my principles and goals.
