What Is the Science of Reading (SoR)?

If you’ve been hearing about the Science of Reading (SoR) but aren’t quite sure what it is, let me break it down! SoR is a research-based approach to teaching reading that focuses on how the brain learns to read—starting with sounds (phonemes) and connecting them to letters (phonics).

💡 How is it different from other methods?

Unlike “whole language” or “three-cueing” approaches, SoR focuses on decoding, not guessing.

It emphasizes phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension—all essential for strong readers.

Backed by decades of research, it’s proven to help ALL learners, including struggling readers.

🌟 The benefits of SoR:

Builds confident, independent readers.

Prevents reading gaps by teaching skills in the right order.

Works for every child, regardless of background or learning style.

💬 Curious about how to use SoR strategies at home? Let me know your questions in the comments!

🔗 Follow me for simple, actionable tips to help your child thrive as a reader.

Together, we can transform the way kids learn to read—one step at a time! ❤️📖

... Read moreThe Science of Reading (SoR) revolutionizes how we understand the reading process. At its core, SoR emphasizes phonemes—the smallest units of sound—and their connection to letters through phonics. Unlike traditional methods that might encourage guessing, SoR is grounded in solid research, promoting systematic decoding. This evidence-based framework nurtures essential skills: phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Notably, it’s designed to cater to all learners, including those who struggle with reading. Studies demonstrate that using SoR principles not only closes reading gaps but also fosters a love for reading. It initiates a stronger foundation for literacy, leading to confident, independent readers. To incorporate SoR strategies at home, parents can create engaging reading practices that align with these findings. Activities that blend enjoyable reading materials with phonics-based games or discussions can enrich a child's literacy experience. Moreover, exploring how different books relate to children's interests can make reading a fun, cherished part of daily life. Understanding the impact of early literacy on lifelong learning is vital, making it essential for parents to actively participate in nurturing their child’s reading journey. As we collectively focus on empowering our children through informed literacy practices, we transform the educational landscape, ensuring every child discovers the joy and importance of reading.
