July is Disability Pride Month. It's about recognizing people with disabilities and addressing how to make things more accessible or helpful to those who face struggles every day due to a disability.
The Disability Pride flag was designed by advocate Ann Magill in October 2021. The original had zig-zagging colored lines.
💚 represents sensory disabilities, including deafness or blindness.
🩵 represents emotional and psychiatric disabilities, including mental health disorders, anxiety, and depression.
🤍 represents invisible and undiagnosed disabilities.
💛 represents neurodiversity.
❤️ represents physical disabilities.
🖤 in the background represents the anger and mourning over the eugenics and neglect that disabled people have to fight against.

The Disability Pride flag is a powerful symbol representing this diversity and resilience. What strikes me most is how each color band conveys a unique part of the disabled experience. For instance, the green stripe for sensory disabilities resonates deeply with those who are deaf or blind, reminding us to consider accessibility in everyday spaces, from communication tools to transportation. The blue shade symbolizes emotional and psychiatric conditions like anxiety or depression, highlighting the importance of mental health support and breaking the stigma around invisible struggles. I also appreciate the gold color signifying neurodiversity, which invites us to celebrate cognitive differences rather than viewing them as deficits. The white stripe stands for invisible and undiagnosed disabilities, a reminder that not all disabilities are immediately apparent, yet they equally impact lives. Meanwhile, the red stripe for physical disabilities prompts reflection on how infrastructure and public facilities can be more inclusive. The dark background of the flag is striking; it honors those lost to ableism, violence, neglect, and the historical mistreatment of disabled individuals.
