We react to our triggers

When we feel an intense reaction to something small or unexpected, it’s often not about what’s happening in the moment.

Studies in fear learning show that the brain’s threat system can fire in milliseconds when a situation resembles a past danger, even if you’re completely safe now. That’s why triggers can feel sudden, overwhelming, and sometimes confusing.

If the brain has learned patterns of danger, it also learns over time to anticipate threats, storing them as survival responses.

So, those “overreactions,” “too sensitive,” or “overthinking” are actually your brain’s attempts to protect you from past experiences. Healing starts with noticing these patterns and grounding yourself in the present.

... Read moreThrough personal experience, I have found that recognizing when I am reacting to triggers rather than current events is the first step toward emotional clarity. Triggers can be elusive—they may arise during everyday encounters that seem harmless, yet suddenly flood you with overwhelming emotions. Research by Joseph LeDoux highlights that these instantaneous reactions stem from the brain's survival mechanism, where fearful memories activate the threat system in milliseconds. For me, understanding that these responses are tied to past trauma, not the present, has been crucial in breaking the cycle of anxiety. Practically, grounding techniques, such as mindful breathing or focusing on sensory inputs, help me reconnect with the present moment and reduce the intensity of these automatic reactions. Journaling can also bring awareness to recurring patterns, making the invisible triggers visible and manageable. It’s important to approach these experiences with self-compassion rather than self-judgment. Labeling oneself as "too sensitive" overlooks the brain’s protective intent. Healing often involves gently retraining the brain through therapy, meditation, or supportive communities to lessen these survival responses over time. If you’ve noticed similar sudden emotional responses, consider reflecting on past experiences that might be influencing your reactions. By learning how our threat system works and applying grounding strategies, it becomes possible to restore emotional balance and regain control over your feelings.
