Provoked attack by Grass Spider
Oh my goodness, you guys, I had such a scare the other day! My super curious cat, Whiskers, was doing her usual patrol around the house when she suddenly fixated on something in the corner. My heart dropped when I realized it was a rather large grass spider! Immediately, a million questions raced through my mind: 'Do grass spiders bite? Is it dangerous for my cat? Can she even smell it?' I frantically tried to get her attention, remembering all the advice I'd heard: 'DON'T BITE IT. DON'T MAKE HIM BITE!' It was a genuine panic moment! After that mini-panic, I did some digging, and what I found helped ease my mind but also reinforced the need for vigilance. Grass spiders, often found spinning funnel webs in our lawns and gardens, are generally quite timid. While they can bite, it's usually only if they feel severely threatened or provoked – exactly what I was worried about when Whiskers was sniffing around, probably thinking it was a new toy! Their venom isn't considered dangerous to humans or pets, typically causing only a mild, localized irritation similar to a bee sting. Still, nobody wants their fur baby to get hurt, right? The thought of Whiskers getting a swollen paw or an upset tummy from ingesting one definitely kept me on edge. Always best to avoid a bite if possible! This whole incident also made me wonder, can cats actually smell spiders? From what I've found, cats primarily hunt by sight and movement. Their incredible vision, especially in low light, and their sensitivity to vibrations are their main tools for spotting tiny, skittering prey like spiders. While they do have an amazing sense of smell, it's more for identifying territory, other animals, or potential food sources rather than actively tracking a tiny spider from afar. So, Whiskers probably saw that grass spider scuttling and her innate hunter instincts kicked in immediately, rather than smelling it from across the room. That's why the 'DON'T BITE IT. DON'T MAKE HIM BITE' warning is so crucial. Even if the spider isn't highly venomous, a cat biting or ingesting any spider can lead to stomach upset, vomiting, or mouth irritation from the spider's body parts or mild toxins. Plus, as pet parents, we can't always identify every spider we see! My best advice, learned the hard way, is to gently intervene if you see your cat playing with or stalking a spider. A loud clap, a quick distraction with a favorite toy, or even gently scooping your cat away can often break their focus without startling the spider into a defensive posture. If your cat does manage to catch a spider, try to remove it from their mouth if it's safe to do so. If you suspect a bite, or if they've eaten a spider, keep a close eye on them for any unusual symptoms like excessive drooling, vomiting, lethargy, or swelling around the face or paws. If you notice anything concerning, it's always best to call your vet. And for preventing these encounters in the first place, I've started being more diligent about vacuuming cobwebs, sealing up cracks and gaps where spiders might get in, and checking under furniture.
