POV: baby barred owl - SAVE US

Barred owls are gentle, intelligent birds who form tight family bonds and play an important role in forest ecosystems. But they’re being unfairly blamed for the decline of the northern spotted owl—and now, hundreds of thousands are being slaughtered across the West Coast of the United States and Canada.

This brutal cull impacts not only the owls themselves, but also the people who love, protect, and study them. As someone who has spent the last 15 years documenting their lives, I’ve witnessed firsthand how trusting and connected these birds are. Many people—especially children, wildlife lovers, birders, and Indigenous communities—are devastated by this needless killing. And worse, the public was never given the full truth.

If this mass killing continues, nearly half a million barred owls—including their hybrid offspring with spotted owls—will be exterminated. That means countless owl families will be destroyed, including baby owlets, mothers on nests, and rare hybrids known as sparred owls. It also sets a horrifying precedent for how we treat wildlife—eliminating one species to try to save another, without addressing the root cause: habitat destruction.

If things stay the same, we’re not just losing owls. We’re losing trust in conservation. We’re losing biodiversity. We’re sending a message that species are disposable.

The cull is already underway. The lives of thousands of owls—some just weeks old—are at risk right now.

We must act immediately to demand a halt to this slaughter and to push for ethical, habitat-based conservation efforts that protect all owls. There is still time to shift the narrative, to protect these birds who have done nothing wrong, and to offer real solutions that don’t involve bullets.

Barred owls saved my life. I owe it to them—and to every person who has watched them with wonder—to fight for theirs.

Please, add your voice now. Let’s show the world that killing one species to "save" another is not conservation. It’s cruelty.

There is a Truth They’re Not Telling You About Barred Owls. The government says barred owls are being killed to ‘save’ the spotted owl. But that’s not the full story. Barred owls and spotted owls can coexist. Sometimes they even fall in love. They even have babies together and those babies are called sparred owls. But the plan is to kill them too.

What no one’s talking about is that the real reason spotted owls are in trouble and that is habitat destruction, logging, deforestation and human expansion. Not barred owls.

And here’s what else they’re hiding:

Great horned owls outnumber barred and spotted owls combined in these same forests. Great horned owls eat both barred and sparred owls. But no one is targeting them. Why target barred owls? Because they’re easy to find. They trust us. If you play their call (which I do not but unfortunately some do), they’ll come to you. And that trust is getting them killed.

They’re not invasive. They’re intelligent. They’re family. And they don’t deserve to die for a problem they didn’t cause. If you fell in love with them through my videos…please don’t let this be the last time they’re seen alive.

PS. I’m not a scientist. I’m not a politician. I’m just someone who almost didn’t survive…until an owl landed in front of me. When I was chronically ill at my lowest, in excruciating pain and alone, it wasn’t therapy or medication that kept me going. It was owls. They looked me in the eye when I felt invisible. They let me into their world when I didn’t want to be part of mine. And every day since then I’ve dedicated my life to protecting them. But now, Canada and the U.S. are planning to slaughter half a million of them. They’re calling them ‘invasive.’ They’re blaming them for the loss of spotted owls. But the truth is much more complicated and much more horrifying. They’re not just killing barred owls. They are killing their babies and their families. These owls trusted me. They trusted humans. And now I need to fight for them the way they saved me. If these owls have ever touched your heart—

please don’t scroll past.

... Read moreThrough my years of watching barred owl chicks, I've come to appreciate their gentle nature and remarkable intelligence. Unlike the harsh image painted by some, barred owls are not invasive villains but vital parts of the forest ecosystem. One heartbreaking truth I’ve learned is that barred owls and spotted owls sometimes interbreed, creating sparred owls—beautiful hybrids symbolizing coexistence rather than conflict. It's important to highlight that habitat destruction—not barred owls—is the true threat to spotted owls. Logging and human expansion drive these declines, yet current conservation tactics unfairly target barred owls and their young. The image of young barred owlets playing innocently with their siblings should remind us of the real cost behind the ongoing cull: families torn apart and futures cut short. The owls’ trusting nature sadly makes them easy targets, as they often approach humans due to their curiosity and familiarity. I've witnessed barred owl chicks responding tenderly to calls that mimic their parents. This trust is precious and should be protected, not exploited. From personal experience, barred owls transformed my life during a difficult time, teaching me about resilience and connection. I believe we owe these creatures the same kindness they've shown me. Instead of bullets, conservation efforts must focus on restoring habitats and promoting coexistence within these forest communities. By sharing our stories, signing petitions, and raising awareness, we can honor barred owls and their chicks and insist on ethical approaches that safeguard all species, ensuring that in this fight for survival, no family is lost unjustly.
