2/12 Stray | Cattle Dog Mix | Female | 1Y | 42lbs | HW NAD/NEG
💜 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀:
Gianna was curled up quietly in her kennel when I came to let her out. She was incredibly reserved and scared, but was still sweet as can be. She was easy to leash, but when I went to take her outside she began shaking with fear. I didn't want to push her boundaries, so I let her go back to her kennel and just sat with her giving her love and treats. I saw her outside the next day with another volunteer and she looked so happy to be soaking up the sunshine. Life has not been kind to this poor girl, we can't let her story end here.
Volunteer 2: This girl was picked up as part of a pack that had been on the streets for months. She’s 43lbs, HW neg, I think a Shep/Cattle Dog mix and she was giving me happy tail wags when I approached her kennel. She was easy to leash and trotted outside with me a little cautious but also curious. There was a female rottie in the run next to us and this girl had no issues with her, she mostly just ignored her even when she was jumping up on the fence behind her. She was calm and quiet and just sat with me in the run. She wasn’t super interested in my snackies but really seemed to enjoy my pets and attention and even gave me a little smile. She’s a little confused/nervous in the shelter environment but I think she’ll really open out of the shelter. She let me dress her up and even put a treat on her nose to balance it. She’s a super cute pretty girl and gave me even more smiles! She didn’t do her business outside and we trotted right back to her kennel easy.

As someone who has volunteered with local animal shelters, I know how heartbreaking it can be to see dogs like Gianna on an urgent euthanasia list. These shelter environments, while necessary, can often be overwhelming and scary for sensitive dogs who have experienced hardship, such as life on the streets or abandonment. Gianna's story, described by volunteers, highlights her reserved and nervous nature but also her sweet disposition and eagerness for affection when given a calm, loving presence. From personal experience, fostering a dog like Gianna can make an enormous difference. Providing a stable, quiet home environment away from the noises and stress of the shelter allows dogs to build trust, confidence, and social skills. With patience, many shy dogs transform into affectionate companions who are ready to find their forever homes. Fosters also give the shelter vital time and space for other animals in need. To anyone local to Houston and able to offer a foster home or assist a rescue, responding quickly can literally save Gianna's life before the 1 PM euthanasia deadline on 2/18. Even if you cannot foster, raising awareness, sharing this information, or donating to local rescue organizations can provide crucial support. Remember, every shelter dog has a unique history, and they deserve a chance to live a happy life outside a kennel. If you can help Gianna or animals like her, contacting BARC via the provided emails and using her animal ID A2057715 is essential. Your efforts can prevent the loss of a loving soul and bring hope to dogs who have endured too much.
