Practicing my patience. Or not, I’ll let YOU decide. Welcome to the life of ADHD DIY 😂
As someone who also juggles ADHD with everyday tasks, I can totally relate to the impulse to skip what needs to be done (like unpacking boxes) and dive into something more creatively fulfilling, like painting. This is a common experience for many with ADHD who often find themselves drawn to activities that capture their interest and offer immediate satisfaction. One tip I’ve found useful is to break down larger, less engaging tasks into smaller, more manageable segments. For instance, instead of facing the overwhelming task of unpacking all at once, set a timer for 10 minutes and unpack just a few items. After your timer goes off, reward yourself with a short creative break—maybe a few minutes of painting or another enjoyable activity. This approach not only makes the task less daunting but also leverages the natural ADHD drive for novelty and variety. Painting and similar DIY projects can have therapeutic benefits, providing an engaging outlet that encourages focus, mindfulness, and a sense of accomplishment. I’ve noticed that immersing myself in color and design helps to calm my racing thoughts and improves my overall mood. Ultimately, embracing the unique way ADHD influences our actions allows us to reframe challenges as opportunities for creative expression. Whether it’s turning a day of unpacking into an unexpected painting session or finding new ways to channel energy productively, the key is patience—with ourselves and the process. After all, DIY is as much about the journey as it is the finished product.
