... Read moreSpeaking from personal experience as a parent, I have witnessed firsthand the profound effects that language can have on individuals with Down syndrome and their families. Terms like "glitch" are not only hurtful but also dismissive of the intelligence and awareness these individuals possess. It's important to recognize that people with Down syndrome hear and understand much more than many realize. This understanding has guided me in advocating for kinder and more accurate language. When discussing sensitive topics such as abortion and prochoice versus prolife debates, the way we frame our words matters greatly. Labeling a person who has Down syndrome as a "glitch" denies their humanity and the unique qualities they bring to the world. In my journey, I've learned that embracing respectful language fosters greater inclusion and empathy. It invites meaningful dialogue rather than division. Encouraging awareness that people with Down syndrome are aware and intelligent breaks down misconceptions and helps society appreciate their contributions. Using thoughtful language also impacts the younger generation, shaping their perceptions and attitudes. Educating children to speak with kindness and understanding about Down syndrome helps build a more accepting and compassionate community. Ultimately, choosing words carefully is a simple yet powerful way to show respect and support for individuals with Down syndrome and their families. Continuing to raise awareness and challenge harmful language contributes to advancing equality and dignity for all.
