... Read moreFrom my experience as a parent of a child with Down syndrome, I find it important to clarify why terms like "glitch" can be hurtful and perpetuate ableism. Ableism is a form of discrimination or prejudice against people with disabilities, and language plays a crucial role in shaping societal attitudes. When someone refers to a minority group or a person with a disability as a "glitch," it implies they are a mistake or a problem to be fixed, rather than a valued individual with their own unique strengths and challenges. Many parents like myself rely on prenatal diagnosis to prepare for the birth of a child with Down syndrome, which can be a deeply personal and emotional journey. Being pro-choice means supporting a person's right to make informed decisions about their pregnancy, but it does not justify dehumanizing language or attitudes. Respectful and inclusive language fosters understanding and breaks down harmful stereotypes. In conversations about abortion and disabilities, the intersection with ableism often arises. Recognizing the humanity and dignity of people with disabilities is essential. Society benefits when we focus on enhancing accessibility, inclusion, and support for all individuals, rather than framing disabilities as defects. Engaging in open and compassionate dialogue can help reduce stigma. From my perspective, it's important to listen to disabled individuals and their families to understand the full picture. Using respectful terms and rejecting negative labels encourages empathy and creates a more accepting community for everyone.
