Exploring the FL Everglades at night was one of the most exhilarating experiences I’ve ever had! If you’re like me and fascinated by wildlife, especially reptiles, then this unique ecosystem in Florida is an absolute must-visit. While my recent trip led to spotting over 30+ snakes, the magic of the Everglades extends far beyond just these slithery friends; it’s a vibrant tapestry of life waiting to be discovered. For anyone planning their own adventure to the Florida Everglades, there are a few things I learned that can make your trip even more incredible. First, consider the time of year. The dry season (roughly November to April) often means lower water levels, concentrating wildlife around available water sources, making them easier to spot. However, the wet season brings lush greenery and a different kind of beauty. Dress in layers, wear sturdy, waterproof shoes, and absolutely do not forget insect repellent – those mosquitoes are no joke, especially at night! Beyond snakes like the native king snakes and corn snakes, or the more concerning invasive species like Burmese pythons (though I didn't see those this time, thankfully!), the Everglades is home to so many other incredible creatures. You'll definitely see Gators, Crocs & other wildlife! Keep an eye out for majestic wading birds like great blue herons and roseate spoonbills, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot a Florida panther or a manatee in the deeper waters. Airboat tours are a popular way to see the vast sawgrass prairies, but I highly recommend exploring some of the walking trails too, as they offer a more intimate look at the flora and smaller fauna. Understanding the difference between native and invasive species, which we talked about during our night herping, is crucial for appreciating the Everglades' delicate balance. Invasive species, like the Cuban tree frog, pose a significant threat to native populations. Learning about them helps you understand the conservation efforts in place to protect this vital wetland. Always maintain a respectful distance from all wildlife; remember, you are in their home. It's an ecosystem unlike any other, offering endless opportunities for discovery and a profound connection with nature.
