How I divide home responsibilities with my husband

When we first got married, we didn’t have a great system for splitting chores. Trying to figure out what was fair with our different work loads, navigating expectations and dealing with little resentments that built up silently.

But 5 years later we’ve found a routine that works really well for us!

I handle most of the laundry and he folds and puts things away. He vacuums daily during our nighttime reset and I mop a few times a week. I plan meals and order groceries, but we both cook. He takes care of the yard and bills. I do the bathrooms and most of the deeper cleaning since I’m home more.

We clean the kitchen every night together. That one routine alone has solved more tension than I can explain. 😅😅

What’s surprised me most:

➡️ Fair doesn’t always look like 50/50

➡️ Clear communication is the MOST important thing

➡️ Shared routine really go a long way toward feeling like a team

It took time and trial & error, but we’ve figured out what works for us and our family 😌

... Read moreDividing household responsibilities fairly can feel like an endless puzzle, right? So many of us start out thinking 'we'll just split everything 50/50,' only to realize that real life is a lot messier than that! If you've ever felt that silent resentment building up over who cleans the bathroom or does the dishes, you're definitely not alone. After years of trial and error, my partner and I discovered that true fairness isn't about perfectly equal halves, but about what works best for your unique situation. It's about recognizing each other's strengths, availability, and even preferences. For instance, maybe one of you genuinely enjoys gardening (dealing with the yard work or maintaining the deck), while the other prefers to tackle indoor tasks like cleaning the bathtub or organizing the fridge. Here are a few strategies and tips that have helped us, and might just help you find your own version of 'fair': Define What 'Fair' Means to You Both: Instead of a strict 50/50, consider a division based on time, effort, or even skill. Does one person work longer hours? Are they naturally better at certain tasks, like organizing the pantry or cleaning the oven? Having an open conversation about what feels equitable for both of you is crucial. My partner is a master at getting the laundry folded and put away, while I don't mind doing the washing! Communicate, Communicate, Communicate: This can’t be stressed enough! Don't let frustrations fester. Schedule a regular, low-pressure 'chore check-in.' Once a month, grab a coffee and talk about what's working and what isn't. Is someone feeling overwhelmed? Are there new tasks that need assigning? Being proactive helps prevent resentment. For example, if I'm feeling swamped with meal planning, I'll bring it up, and we can brainstorm solutions together. Harness the Power of Routine: Shared routines are game-changers. Like us, you might find that tackling one task together daily, like cleaning the kitchen sink and wiping down counters after dinner, makes a huge difference. It fosters teamwork and prevents a mountain of work from accumulating. A 15-minute 'nightly reset' can work wonders! Consider a 'Zone Defense': Instead of listing every single chore, sometimes it's easier to assign 'zones' or categories. For instance, one person might be responsible for all 'bathroom cleaning' (toilet, bathtub, floor), while the other handles 'kitchen maintenance' (dishes, wiping down surfaces, keeping the fridge tidy). This gives ownership and clarity. Be Flexible and Re-evaluate: Life changes, and so should your chore division. A new job, a new baby, or even just a busy season can throw the old system off. Be prepared to revisit your plan and adjust as needed. What worked perfectly a year ago might need tweaking today. Finding your perfect chore-sharing system takes time and patience, but the peace and harmony it brings to your home are absolutely worth it. What are your biggest chore-sharing challenges or triumphs?
