Why Avoidants Change

There has been so much argument over which version of the avoidant is the true version of them. And two things can be true at once. They can be amazing people when they are infatuated with you and also be horrible partners.

We are all comprised of parts and respond differently when each part is triggered.

... Read moreIt's common to notice that avoidant partners seem very different once the initial infatuation fades. This change often stems from them 'wearing a mask' during the early months, presenting a version of themselves that feels safe and likable to their partner. Over time, as comfort grows but insecurities resurface, their true avoidant tendencies may emerge—distancing behaviors, fear of intimacy, and emotional withdrawal. Avoidant attachment is rooted deeply in how individuals learned to manage emotional closeness, often stemming from childhood experiences where vulnerability felt unsafe. This makes it challenging for avoidants to maintain deep connection without feeling overwhelmed or threatened. Understanding this helps partners recognize that these shifts are not about personal rejection but self-protection mechanisms. Emotional intelligence plays a vital role in decoding these behaviors. By becoming conscious of their own emotional triggers and responses, both avoidants and their partners can cultivate more compassionate communication. Conscious love involves embracing each other's parts—including vulnerabilities and defenses—to foster healing rather than conflict. Recognizing that everyone has multiple parts that respond differently depending on triggers allows for patience and empathy. Rather than expecting avoidants to change overnight, supporting their gradual growth through trust-building, transparent dialogue, and relational safety encourages authentic connection. In relationships where avoidant tendencies exist, healing is a journey marked by moments of distance and closeness. The ‘mask’ is a coping tool, and when partners understand this dynamic, they can work together towards conscious love that respects individual needs while building lasting emotional intimacy.
