Hey everyone! I’m so excited to share my latest miniature sculpting adventure with you all. As some of you know, I love diving into the world of tiny creations, and this one was a particularly fun challenge. It all started with a new tool I was trying out – you know how it is, a new tool means a lot of practice! I ended up with a ton of extra clay balls and decided to try making some new animals I’d never tackled before, in the teeniest tiny size imaginable. Initially, I was aiming for a ferret, but as I worked the clay, it started looking more and more like something ancient and horned. Before I knew it, I was looking at a tiny triceratops! I’ve made a tiny brontosaurus before, but never a triceratops, so I decided to accept the challenge. Sculpting something so small, like this little guy who ended up being just a few inches tall (around 10.1 cm), is mostly the same as making a larger one, but with some crucial differences. The biggest hurdle was carving out the crown pieces versus just sculpting them. It's truly hard to get clay to move around precisely when it's so tiny, and it dries out super quickly, making carving a bunch easier than trying to sculpt intricate details from wet clay. I went ahead and finished the head, then it was time to move on to the body. I made it the same way I always do: take a ball, cut a plus into it, and then gently move the clay around to form the shape. Once the head and body were looking cute together, I used the slipping and scoring technique to attach the front and back of the body, and the bottom of the head. For the tail, I had to make it kind of chunky just to make sure it wouldn’t break too easily once it dried. After that was slipped and scored on, and the head was securely attached, the final touch was piping on all his horns. That way, he wasn't just a 'tops' anymore; he was officially a triceratops! Just like that, we had a teeny tiny dino! I even tried making an even smaller version, though it was only slightly smaller. It makes me wonder, for future tiny creations, should I always make them as trinkets for display, or should I explore making some as charms? I’d love to hear your thoughts! Working on these tiny sculptures, whether it's tiny axolotls or dinosaurs, is such a rewarding process, and I'm always learning new tricks.
