Getting through the “ugly” stage of locs

I hate calling it the "ugly phase" but it is what it is lol.

The ugly phase of locs is the part of the locking process where your twists are no longer fresh, they have shrunken up to almost half of the initial length, the buds are forming, and the locs are just a hot mess!!!! This phase is a widely disliked part of the loc journey because it's where you have to learn to appreciate your hair for what it is! This phase is fortunately just a few months but it definitely teaches you self love. This is usually the phase where people decide to comb out the locs because it was too much for them. If you are at this stage, stick it through! You got this. I wore a lot of hoodies in that stage lol.

... Read moreWhen someone asks me how I got through the 'ugly phase' of my locs, I honestly tell them it was a mix of patience, styling tricks, and a whole lot of self-love. That initial stage, often unglamorously dubbed the 'ugly phase,' can feel incredibly challenging, but trust me, it’s a vital part of your loc journey that truly tests your commitment and teaches you profound lessons about self-acceptance. For many, this phase kicks in a few weeks to a few months after starting locs, whether you're rocking coils, two-strand twists, or even freeforms. Your fresh starter locs begin to shrink, often looking much shorter than when you first installed them. This shrinkage is totally normal! It’s your hair beginning to condense and interlock. Along with the shrinking, you'll notice budding – little knots forming along the strands as your hair starts to permanently fuse. This creates a frizzy, sometimes lumpy appearance that might not feel like your most flattering look, making you feel like your locs are indeed 'a hot mess.' So, how do you navigate this visually awkward period without wanting to comb them out? 1. Embrace the Power of Headwraps & Hats: These became my best friends! A stylish headwrap or a cute beanie can instantly elevate your look and provide a sense of confidence when your locs aren't cooperating. Experiment with different fabrics, colors, and tying styles. They're not just for hiding; they're a fashion statement. 2. Master Simple Styling: While your locs are maturing, intricate styles might be off-limits, but don't underestimate the power of basic updos. A simple bun, pigtails, or even pinning back the front sections can make a huge difference. Search for 'starter loc styles for ugly phase' on Lemon8 or YouTube – you'll find tons of inspiring ideas from others who’ve been there. 3. Practice Gentle Care: Avoid over-manipulation. Excessive twisting or pulling can hinder the locking process and cause breakage. Keep your scalp clean and moisturized, and protect your locs, especially at night, with a satin bonnet or pillowcase to minimize frizz. 4. Shift Your Mindset: This is perhaps the most crucial step. Instead of seeing it as 'ugly,' view it as the 'transformation phase.' Understand that your hair is doing exactly what it's supposed to do. This journey is about growth, not just for your hair, but for you. Use this time to focus on self-love and appreciate the natural beauty of your hair in every stage. Remind yourself that billions of people have beautiful locs, and yours will get there too. 5. Connect with the Community: You are absolutely not alone! Share your journey on platforms like Lemon8, follow others with locs, and engage in discussions. Seeing others' experiences and getting encouragement can be incredibly uplifting. It helps to realize that everyone goes through this awkward stage. Remember, this 'ugly phase' is temporary. It usually lasts a few months, typically settling down by 6-12 months, depending on your hair type and maintenance. The patience and love you pour into your locs during this time will be rewarded with robust, beautiful, and uniquely yours mature locs. Stick it through! The transformation is worth it, and you'll emerge with not just a stunning hairstyle, but a deeper appreciation for your natural self.
