Additional tips/notes: WATCH YOUR FOOD closely.
Soul food has always held a special place in my heart—it’s not just about the food but the memories and traditions tied to it. When I prepare a soul food Sunday meal, I love starting early to let the smells fill the house, inviting everyone to gather around. Roasting the pork slowly for 4-5 hours at 370°F allows the meat to become incredibly tender while infusing it with flavors from bell peppers, onions, seasoning, and butter. The key is to sear the sirloin roast thoroughly before placing it in the oven, locking in the juices and adding a rich crust. For the sides, I recommend using Velveeta mac and cheese because it’s quick and creamy, and adding a little extra milk thickens it to that perfect comfort food consistency. Fresh greens seasoned with fatback like bacon or ham hock bring a smoky, savory depth that complements the richness of the pork and mac. Don’t skip the cornbread—it’s simple but essential. Mixing flour, vegetable oil, eggs, sugar, and milk creates a moist, slightly sweet bread that balances the savory meal. One important tip is to watch your food closely, especially the roast, as oven temperatures can vary. Adjust cooking time as needed to avoid drying out the meat. Soul food cooking is as much an art as it is science—trust your senses and enjoy the process. Sharing this meal with family or friends makes it even more special, creating memories around food that nourish both body and soul. If you’re new to soul food cooking, start with this classic spread and customize the seasoning and sides to suit your taste. It’s all about soul, comfort, and community!
