The Green Pastures
The Green Pastures (1936) is one of only six all-Black films produced in the Hollywood studio era.
The Green Pastures retold the stories of Genesis and Exodus from the point of view of rural African Americans. It featured an all-Black cast, the Hall Johnson Choir, & Rex Ingram’s performance as “Da Lawd.”
The film was criticized for its racial stereotyping but the Green Pastures proved to be an enormously popular film.
