Why Many Men Don't Seek Therapy or Mental Health Coaching

When discussing mental health, one reality often overlooked is that many men—especially African American men—are significantly less likely to seek therapy, counseling, or mental health coaching. While every person's situation is different, several cultural, historical, and social factors contribute to this trend.

For many African American men, strength, resilience, and self-reliance have long been viewed as necessary survival skills. Generations of discrimination, economic hardship, and social pressures often taught men to "push through," "handle it themselves," and avoid showing vulnerability. While resilience is admirable, it can sometimes make it difficult to acknowledge emotional struggles or seek support when it is needed.

There is also a historical distrust of institutions within portions of the African American community. Negative experiences with healthcare systems, unequal treatment, and cultural misunderstandings have caused some individuals to question whether mental health professionals will truly understand their experiences.

Beyond the African American community, men in general often face similar barriers. Many men are raised with messages such as:

"Be tough."

"Don't cry."

"Man up."

"Handle your own problems."

These messages can unintentionally create the belief that asking for help is a sign of weakness rather than wisdom. As a result, some men may suppress stress, anxiety, grief, trauma, or depression instead of addressing it directly.

Another factor is that many men are problem-solvers by nature. If they cannot immediately identify a practical solution, they may avoid discussing the issue altogether. Some men also view therapy as talking about problems rather than learning skills to overcome them, even though modern therapy and coaching often focus heavily on practical strategies, emotional regulation, communication, goal setting, and personal growth.

Unfortunately, avoiding help does not make stress disappear. Unaddressed emotional pain can sometimes show up as anger, irritability, isolation, workaholism, substance abuse, relationship problems, physical health issues, or chronic stress.

From a biblical perspective, seeking wise counsel is not weakness. Scripture repeatedly encourages wisdom, accountability, and support from others:

"Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed." (Proverbs 15:22)

Seeking therapy, counseling, coaching, mentorship, or pastoral guidance does not mean a man is weak. It can be a sign of humility, self-awareness, and a commitment to becoming healthier for himself, his family, and his community.

The goal is not to make men less strong. The goal is to help men carry life's burdens in healthier ways so that strength is accompanied by wisdom, healing, and emotional maturity.

Moreover, balancing strength with emotional maturity can help men avoid the harmful effects of unresolved stress, such as anger or isolation. Encouraging men to see seeking help as a wise and strong act—not contradictory to masculinity—can transform how mental health is approached within families and communities. Ultimately, combining cultural sensitivity, practical mental health strategies, and community support can create environments where men feel safe, understood, and empowered to prioritize their mental well-being. This approach nurtures "real strength" that includes wisdom and healing, benefiting not only individuals but also their families and broader communities.
