A guy I used to work with stopped by my new job the today. Good brother. Hard worker. In his early 30's. The kind of man who'd give you the shirt off his back...even if it was his favorite one. (I'm never going to say names of friends in my post, lol 😁)
After we caught up, he got quiet and said, "Man...I think I've been making mistakes trying to keep this new relationship together."
I asked him, "What do you mean?"
He said, "I'm always compromising. Always adjusting. Always trying to make it work."
I laughed and said, "Brother...there's a difference between sacrificing and surrendering your self-respect. Jesus sacrificed Himself to save people. He didn't compromise His truth just to keep people around."
Then we started talking.
I told him, "If somebody only gives you attention when it's convenient...keeps you confused about where you stand...disappears for days and pops back up like nothing happened...loves your loyalty but avoids commitment...and keeps making promises about 'one day' without ever changing today...that's not building a relationship. That's building frustration."
He nodded his head so hard I thought his neck was about to file for workers' comp. 😂
Then I said, "And pay attention to respect. When someone constantly talks to you any kind of way, ignores your boundaries, undermines you instead of encouraging you, treats your opinion like background music, and no longer cares how they treat you...that's usually a sign respect has packed its bags....or found anotherman."
Proverbs says, "Above all else, guard your heart." It doesn't say hand it to everybody with a good body, chemistry and a perfect smile.
Sometimes we're so busy praying, "Lord, don't let me lose them," that God is saying, "Son...I'm trying to keep you from losing yourself."
A healthy relationship shouldn't require you to shrink, beg, chase, or compromise your God-given identity just to keep somebody comfortable.
Real love doesn't leave you constantly confused. It brings peace, consistency, accountability, and mutual respect.
Sometimes the holiest thing a person can say isn't "I'll keep trying."
Sometimes it's... "God bless you, but I'm gonna keep my peace too." 🙏🏾
