I’m tired of the unpaid expectations…

I’ve never had children and yet everyone acts like I’m dying to watch theirs. No one ever asks my partner about it. Take my neighbor, a part-time artist (unemployed) who split with his partner. After other moms got tired of his one-sided babysitting asks, he turned to me.

He’d text “Got plans?” and if I said no, hit me with “I’ll drop G off to keep you company!” I shut it down 8 times before he snapped. Then he begged 2 hours of help for a friend’s viewing but vanish for 5 hours. I fed G, waited, and finally handed him to his lodger at 9pm. He glared at me later and turned hostile.

Another neighbor ghosted me for 8 hours while I babysat, then stumbled home drunk. A friend dumped her kid at my place, went MIA, and hated me when I called her ex to pick him up. Even a friend’s husband recently made me watch his three kids for hours while he cooked in the same house just because I visited solo post-separation. I don’t dislike kids, but I don’t want to parent them. Why is saying “no” seen as a personal attack?

2025/12/8 Edited to

... Read moreMany women face the frustrating expectation that they should provide unpaid childcare simply because they are female. This unfair assumption often leads to uncomfortable situations where their personal boundaries are ignored. The common question "Because I'm female so everyone thinks I owe them free babysitting?" reflects a deeper issue about gender roles and societal expectations. Unpaid babysitting requests can cause significant stress and resentment, especially when friends, neighbors, or acquaintances repeatedly demand help without reciprocation or appreciation. Women who decline these requests are sometimes viewed as rude or selfish, despite having no obligation to serve as unpaid caregivers—particularly those who do not have children themselves. This dynamic is tied to gender double standards that persist in many communities, where caregiving and domestic work are still disproportionately expected from women, regardless of their personal circumstances or willingness. This results not only in emotional strain but also in overlooked labor contributions that undermine women's autonomy and time. Setting clear boundaries by firmly communicating "no" to unwarranted babysitting requests is important for maintaining self-respect and mental well-being. Unfortunately, as illustrated by the shared stories, some people react negatively or even with hostility when their demands are refused. This reaction stems from entitlement and ingrained gender norms that need broader societal discussion and reevaluation. For those experiencing similar pressures, connecting with supportive networks that respect personal boundaries can help. Additionally, increasing awareness of gender double standards in unpaid labor encourages cultural shifts towards equality. Everyone, regardless of gender, should have the right to choose when and how they engage in childcare without pressure or guilt. Ultimately, challenging these outdated expectations is essential for creating fairer, more respectful interactions. It’s perfectly acceptable to say no to unpaid babysitting, especially when it imposes on your personal life and limits your freedom. Recognizing and calling out gender-based assumptions helps pave the way for more equitable treatment in all aspects of life.

Your first mistake was allowing them to drop the kids off. Just say you don’t babysit and that would end it all right there. You have to set that boundary with them.
