One dark window duology🐦‍⬛

Like many of you, I initially hesitated to pick up the One Dark Window duology by Rachel Gillig. It was on my radar, but I just hadn't taken the plunge. Oh, how I regret that now! Once I started, I was utterly captivated by this dark, atmospheric world. If you’re looking for a book that truly embodies 'gothic fantasy' – think ancient curses, shadowy landscapes, and a looming sense of dread – then prepare to be enthralled. The world-building is truly exceptional, drawing you into a kingdom shrouded in mist and fear, where ancient magic known as 'Providence' can bless or curse. The covers themselves, with their dark castles and twisted trees under a full moon, perfectly set the tone for the eerie beauty within. This isn't your typical light fantasy; it’s steeped in mystery and a unique magic system tied to a deck of cards, which I found incredibly original and fascinating. Now, let's talk about the romance, which I know many of you are curious about! The love interest, Ravyn, is everything you'd want in a morally grey, protective hero. The dynamic between him and Elspeth is a slow-burn, angsty, and utterly delicious 'grumpy x sunshine' (though Elspeth has her own shadows). Their connection deepens beautifully throughout the duology, growing from reluctant allies to something profound. In the first book, *One Dark Window*, the romance is definitely a subplot, simmering beneath the surface of the larger plot involving curses and secrets. It's built on tension, longing, and subtle glances, which I absolutely adored. I will say, I agree with the sentiment that I wished for even more of Elspeth and Ravyn's direct romantic interaction in *Two Twisted Crowns*, especially given the intensity of their bond. However, the plot in the second book is so gripping that it still holds its own. And for the burning question: the 'spice level.' For those of you wondering, I’d place this duology firmly in the 'closed door' or 'fade to black' category, with a strong emphasis on romantic tension and emotional intimacy rather than explicit scenes. There are passionate kisses and clear indications of intimacy, but the scenes themselves are not graphically detailed. If you're hoping for explicit spice, this might not be your cup of tea, but if you appreciate a romance where the emotional connection and yearning are paramount, you'll be very satisfied. It’s more about the deep bond, the sacrifices, and the unspoken understanding between the characters than physical descriptions. Ultimately, if you're a fan of richly built gothic fantasy with a compelling, angsty slow-burn romance, intricate curses, and plenty of secrets to unravel, this duology is a must-read. Don't make my mistake of putting it off – dive in and let yourself be lost in Elspeth's dark, magical world!
