How I built a stronger bond with my dog 💕

If I could have any of my posts blow up, it would be this one! 💕🌱

When I first got Sofie, she had a lot of trust issues. She didn't like anyone touching her paws, tail or teeth and I know she didn't truly trust me. I pet her whenever I wanted and wasn't clear with my directions and training. I can see looking back now, I was being very selfish.

I'm all about giving humans consent, and believe we should teach children about consent but I never thought about animals.

I also never had experience with a more primitive dog before, all my dogs growing up would accept affection at any moment. Sofie is a pomeranian mix but has more primitive genes. She acts very much like her Spitz ancestors. Even now, with all the love and trust she has in me, she only likes affection on her terms. It took me a long time to get used to that and truly listen to what SHE wanted before myself.

Even if you have a dog who loves affection, all animals deserve a say. Does your dog actually *like* being booped? ..or poked? You might be surprised once you look into dog behavior.

It just might save your dogs life.. like it did in our case when Sofie lost complete mobility last year from lymes. I had to listen to her very subtle cues and she had to trust that I wouldn't cross her boundaries- for her own survival.

✨️ Dogs are far more intelligent than we give them credit for sometimes. ✨️

... Read moreBuilding a strong bond with your dog requires understanding and patience. Dogs, much like humans, have unique personalities and preferences that should be respected. For example, giving your dog the choice in interactions fosters trust and emotional security. This means recognizing when they want to play or be left alone, as well as understanding their non-verbal cues. Teaching consent, such as allowing your dog to approach you for affection instead of forcing it, can dramatically improve your connection. Additionally, addressing behavioral issues with positive reinforcement techniques is crucial. This encourages good behavior without instilling fear or resentment. Techniques such as associating rewards with commands make learning enjoyable for dogs, reinforcing a trusting relationship. It's also important to respect your dog's ancestry and instincts, as some breeds may require more space and independence. Moreover, activities that stimulate your dog's mind, like puzzle toys and training, not only keep them engaged but also deepen your bond. Regular walks and socialization with other dogs can further enhance their confidence and trust in you. Remember, every interaction counts in building a lasting relationship marked by respect, understanding, and mutual love. This approach not only leads to a happier pet but also promotes a safe environment, positively influencing their behavior and health.
