... Read moreFrom my experience living with Tourette Syndrome as a woman, one of the biggest challenges is managing how others react to my tics in public. Often, people stare or give uncomfortable looks instead of approaching with kindness or genuine curiosity. This can make me feel ashamed or prompt me to try to suppress my tics to avoid attention, which isn't easy. However, when someone politely asks if I have Tourette's and shows a willingness to learn and understand, it feels incredibly validating and encouraging. I try to be open to educating others because awareness is key to breaking down stigma. Many people only see severe cases portrayed in media, so they may not realize that tics can be subtle and less noticeable in some individuals like me. I've found that when approached with respect, it's a great opportunity to share my experiences and advocate for more acceptance. It also helps me feel less isolated knowing that others might be curious for the right reasons, not judgment. For women with Tourette Syndrome, this dynamic can be even more complex due to social expectations about appearance and behavior. Encouraging conversations and respectful questions can foster a better understanding and create a supportive community. If you see someone ticcing, remember that polite interest and openness can mean the world to someone managing Tourette's every day.
