Sharing my experience with Tourette's syndrome and its related comorbidities has always been a delicate balance. One thing I learned early on is the importance of warning people before I get too comfortable, so they can better understand the sudden tics or behaviors they might witness. It can feel awkward at first, but being open helps reduce misunderstandings and builds trust. When you tell someone about your condition ahead of time, it sets the stage for empathy rather than confusion or judgment. Many people aren’t familiar with what living with Tourette’s entails, especially the unpredictability of tics and how comorbidities like anxiety or ADHD can complicate things further. For me, this proactive communication created a safe space where my friends and colleagues knew what to expect and felt more comfortable around me. Moreover, warning others can help prevent uncomfortable situations or social faux pas, making interactions smoother. It also empowers those around me to ask questions and learn more if they feel comfortable, contributing to greater awareness overall. I encourage anyone with Tourette’s or similar experiences to consider sharing in your own way—whether that’s a simple heads-up or a more detailed conversation—because it truly changes how others perceive and support you.
