... Read moreLiving with Tourette's syndrome often comes with misunderstandings from others, especially about what tics look like and when they occur. Many people assume individuals with Tourette's tic nonstop, but this isn't accurate. Tics can vary in frequency and intensity throughout the day and may even temporarily lessen in certain situations. From my personal experience and conversations with others who have Tourette's, it's clear that the visible expressions of the disorder are just one aspect. Sometimes tics are subtle, like throat clearing or eye blinking, and other times they’re more pronounced. People around us often don’t realize that having Tourette’s doesn’t mean constant or disruptive movements; it’s a complex condition with individual variations. One challenging part is addressing comments like "You don’t look like you have Tourette’s" or "I’ve never seen you tic," which, while likely well-meaning, reveal a lack of awareness about the condition’s diversity. Raising public understanding by sharing stories, educating about the neurological basis of Tourette's, and highlighting that tics come and go helps reduce stigma. If someone you know has Tourette's, patience and an open mind can go a long way. Supporting them means recognizing their experiences without judgment and appreciating that their condition isn’t defined solely by their tics. This kind of empathy promotes a more inclusive environment where individuals with Tourette’s can feel accepted and valued.
