Teaching a fearful cat to eat from a spoon 🙀🖤

#feralcats tip on getting them used to spoons.

All cats started only eating when I left.

Very fearful responce to then rushing at the door for food.

When they did get close they were still afraid with swiping and hissing agression.

They would slap the spoon out of my hand. This is the first time the male black cat took food from my hand gently. He became accustom to the spoon as a positive leaving it on the plate and getting used to it moving around him. #catlife #trainingcats #cats

... Read moreYou know, getting a truly fearful or feral cat to trust you enough to eat from a spoon can feel like a superpower! My own experience, as I shared in the main post, was a journey of patience and gentle persistence. It wasn't always easy, especially with those initial swipes and hisses from my 'scaredy cats'! But if you're looking to hand-feed a cat, whether for bonding, medication, or just because they're a bit finicky, here’s a deeper dive into how you can make it happen, building on what I learned. First, why spoon-feed at all? Beyond just a cute photo op, it's incredibly useful! Spoon-feeding can be a lifesaver for sick cats who've lost their appetite, making sure they get vital nutrients or even medication mixed into a tasty puree. It's also fantastic for fostering trust with shy or newly rescued felines, like the feral cats I work with. Plus, for kittens, especially those transitioning from bottle-feeding, getting them used to licking from a spoon can be a gentle step towards solid food. And yes, sometimes it’s just a special treat, like when a kitten is happily licking a bit of plain yogurt off a spoon – it’s adorable and helps them associate spoons with good things! So, where do you start with these 'scaredy cats'? Choose Your Tools Wisely: Opt for a small, shallow spoon. Plastic can be less intimidating than metal if your cat is super sensitive to sounds or textures. Tempting Treats are Key: This isn't the time for dry kibble! Think highly palatable wet foods, lickable treats like Churu, or even homemade purees of cooked chicken or fish (ensure no spices!). For kittens, a tiny bit of plain, unsweetened yogurt can be a novel treat. The Gradual Approach: My trick was never to force it. For my most fearful boy, I started by simply leaving the spoon with a dollop of yummy food near his usual eating spot, and then I’d walk away. He needed to explore it on his terms. Once he was comfortable with the spoon being *present*, I'd sit further away, gently talking. Slowly Introduce Your Hand: Once they're okay eating from the spoon when you're not right there, try holding the spoon steadily, a comfortable distance from their nose. Don't push it into their face. Let them lean in. If they hesitate, pull back slightly. It’s all about letting them make the choice. Patience, Patience, Patience: This process can take days, weeks, or even months, especially with truly fearful or feral cats. There will be setbacks. My black cat used to swipe the spoon right out of my hand, but I never reacted negatively. Just reset and try again later. Every tiny step forward, like a gentle lick, is a huge victory! Positive Reinforcement: When they do take a lick, even a tiny one, give soft, verbal praise. If they're comfortable with touch, a gentle stroke (but only if they initiate or welcome it!). Associate the spoon and your presence with positive, rewarding experiences. Remember, every cat is an individual. What worked for my 'scaredy cats' might need a slight tweak for yours. The goal is to build trust and create a positive association with the spoon and your hand. This isn't just about feeding; it's about strengthening your bond, one gentle lick at a time. If your cat refuses to eat for an extended period, always consult your vet, as loss of appetite can be a sign of underlying health issues. Good luck, fellow cat parent!
