Our parents made ‘because I said so’ a life lesson

2025/1/15 Edited to

... Read moreIt's funny how a simple phrase like 'because I said so' can instantly transport us back to childhood, isn't it? My own parents, bless their hearts, practically had it copyrighted! I often reflect on why they relied on it so much. For them, I think it was less about being dismissive and more about establishing a clear boundary when explanations felt too complex, or perhaps when they simply didn't have the emotional bandwidth after a long day. Growing up with strict parents meant 'because I said so' wasn't just a throwaway line; it was often the final word. While it could be frustrating as a kid, looking back, I realize it taught me a lot about respecting authority and understanding that not every decision in life comes with a detailed justification. Sometimes, you just have to trust the judgment of those who care for you, even if you don't fully grasp it at the moment. I remember countless times asking "why?" only to be met with that definitive statement. Whether it was about bedtime, finishing my vegetables, or limiting screen time (which, let's be real, was mostly TV back then!), 'because I said so' was the ultimate mic drop. I think for many parents of that era, it was a way to maintain order and teach discipline without getting bogged down in lengthy negotiations. They probably didn't have the same parenting resources or 'gentle parenting' philosophies we see today. My parents were definitely from the 'tough love' school! Now, as an adult, I find myself sometimes wanting to use a similar phrase, especially when dealing with younger relatives! 😂 It's a reminder of how deeply ingrained some of these parenting tactics become. Of course, modern parenting advice often suggests explaining reasons to foster understanding and critical thinking. But honestly, sometimes, when you're exhausted and just need a situation resolved, a firm, clear boundary (even if it sounds a bit like 'because I said so') can be incredibly effective. What I learned from my strict parents and their 'because I said so' moments wasn't just obedience, but also resilience. It taught me to accept certain limitations and to find creative ways to entertain myself within those boundaries. It forged a certain independence. So, while it felt arbitrary at times, it undeniably shaped who I am today. It’s a powerful phrase that, for better or worse, defines a generation's upbringing. It’s a shared experience that unites many of us who grew up under similar household rules.
