Not just a romance reader

My Current Read

📖 Name of the Book: ALLY IS A VERB by Rose LeMay

📄 Plot: To help non-indigenous people in Canada move from performative support into action. This book helps with the questions; “What do I do? “How can I authentically speak to truth and reconciliation?” As well as gives a the reader a guideline to navigating the 94 calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

📖 Genre: Non-Fictional (How to Guide)

📄 My Favorite Quotes: “Allies start with enough literacy to do no harm.”

💭 My Thoughts: As a white presenting woman I think it is our job as non-indigenous folks to do our own research. We all need to find a path forward and we can’t just sit back and avoid the topic anymore… we never should have.

... Read moreReading ALLY IS A VERB has been a transformative experience for me as someone hoping to actively support Indigenous peoples in Canada. The book does a remarkable job laying out not just what the issues are, but concrete ways individuals can move from simply saying they support reconciliation to taking meaningful action. One of the key takeaways for me was understanding the concept of ‘ally literacy’—the knowledge needed to ensure actions don’t inadvertently cause harm. This guide is not just theoretical; it provides a clear pathway aligned with the 94 Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, offering practical advice on how to engage with these measures in daily life. What resonates deeply is the call for non-Indigenous people, especially those like myself who identify as white presenting, to do our own research and take responsibility for learning and growth rather than expecting Indigenous communities to educate us constantly. Additionally, the book challenged me to reflect on my own actions and silence surrounding Indigenous issues and heritage. It’s so easy to feel overwhelmed or distant from systemic reconciliation processes, but Ally Is A Verb breaks down barriers and invites readers to put literacy into practice actively. I also appreciated how the book connects to real-world initiatives and community efforts, which made me consider how local groups and movements contribute to larger national healing. Moving from performative allyship to genuine partnership requires intention, ongoing education, and humility—qualities this book encourages cultivating. If you’re serious about truth and reconciliation in Canada, this book is an essential companion on that journey. It encourages all of us to be more than passive supporters—to truly listen, learn, and act. I recommend pairing this read with involvement in community dialogues and supporting Indigenous-led projects for a fuller understanding and impact. Taking this reading journey has reshaped my understanding of what it means to be an ally, highlighting that it is indeed a verb—something active we must embody daily.
