At 53 I stopped feeling guilty about protecting my peace.

At 53 I stopped feeling guilty about protecting my peace. At 53, I’ve learned that peace is something you have to protect. I don’t feel guilty anymore for setting boundaries, saying no, stepping away, or choosing what’s best for me. I’ve worked too hard to get to this place in my life where I can wake up, open my blinds, take care of my home, and genuinely feel grateful for where I am. Everything doesn’t deserve access to you. Sometimes protecting your peace is the biggest form of self-care.

What’s one thing you stopped allowing once you found your peace?

... Read moreThroughout my journey of learning to protect my peace, I found that the biggest challenge was overcoming the ingrained belief that saying no or setting boundaries was selfish or rude. However, I've come to realize these actions are powerful affirmations of self-respect. For example, I stopped feeling compelled to answer every call or explain myself endlessly. This space created allowed me more time to focus on what truly matters—my family, my home, and my mental calm. One practical step I took was limiting social media and unnecessary obligations that drained my energy. Protecting my peace doesn’t mean detaching from life but rather being selective about what and who I give my energy to. It's about recognizing that not everything deserves unlimited access to our minds and emotions. I also embraced simple daily rituals like opening my blinds each morning to invite natural light, tending to my space mindfully, and acknowledging my progress in personal growth. These small acts became touchstones of gratitude and peace. To anyone struggling with guilt for prioritizing themselves, remember, self-care is not selfish—it’s necessary for a fulfilling and balanced life. What I stopped allowing was the need to please everyone at my own expense. This shift has transformed how I engage with people and life’s challenges because now I protect my peace as the valuable resource it is. This message resonates especially with those over 50, who might feel societal pressure to keep giving endlessly. It’s okay not to be available all the time; sometimes, the best answer is a gentle but firm no.
